Sprint announced today that it will be cutting back internal and external labor costs by at least $350 million in the 4th quarter of 2009. This includes layoffs of 2,000 to 2,500 positions within the company. They said most of the impacted positions will be eliminated by December 31, 2009.

“The reduction impacts positions companywide, including those previously announced this month in the Wholesale organization, as well as a reduction in contractor and other outside labor. The company is taking this action in a careful manner to ensure that there is no impact on the improved customer experience that has been reflected in much higher levels of satisfaction in customer surveys and in independent performance tests. Sprint has pledged to not waver on the company’s commitment to quality service and products.”

Clearwire To Get Another $1.5 Billion

Sprint is preparing to put another billion dollars into Clearwire, its 4G WiMAX partner. Their other partners, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Intel and Google (exclude Google) are collectively putting in another $500 million into the pot. There are also rumors that Clearwire has looked at T-Mobile as another possible partner. If Sprint is losing customers as was reported for the last quarter, they must still be doing something right if they can fork over another billion dollars into Clearwire, although that’s the pony they decided to ride for 4G, so they’re hoping it’ll work better than LTE.

[Exclusive] Sprint to give customers Free Call Forwarding on Nov. 8th

SprintGV

Here is an excellent piece of information that was sent to the PPCG News Room today. According to an informed source, Sprint will be unleashing conditional (no answer/busy signal) free call forwarding to any phone number, including Google Voice. This means that any incoming call to your Sprint number that encounters a busy signal or no answer will be forwarded to a pre-selected (by the customer) phone number for free.

Also, Simply Everything customers will also begin receiving unconditional (immediate) call forwarding included in their plan beginning late November. On a technical note, this is not available in the system UNTIL after an upgrade, so it will not work until the system has been upgraded. This is great news for any Sprint customer. An added service at no extra cost? Sounds like a win to me!

AT&T Hints At End Of iPhone Exclusivity

At&t had a great last quarter, activating 3.2 million new iPhones, 40% of which were purchased by customers new to AT&T. AT&T’s exclusivity deal with Apple is expected to end next year, though neither company has disclosed the terms of the arrangement.

“Even if we lose the iPhone exclusivity, we’re going to probably be the only ones that have a speed of 7.2 (Mbps) that these phones can work on,” says AT&T’s Ralph de la Vega.

At&t has been quickly trying to boost its network by expanding coverage, specifically 3G expansion.  They are turning on new 3G sites everyday, and de la Vega said dropped calls have been down about 12%.

So if the exclusivity deal ends sometime next year, will At&t’s network be enough to keep users on board, or will we see them move away as fast as possible.  That all might depend on who else picks up the iPhone.  As we all remember, both Sprint and Verizon were approched by Apple and turned the deal down.  Will either of them change their mind now?

Sprint and Clearwire announce more cites, dates for 4G launch

Today Sprint and Clearwire, their WiMax partner, announced several cities and completion dates for their 4G rollout collaboration. Philadelphia is expected to launch within a matter of the “next few weeks.” November will prove to be a good month for Chicago, Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio, as they are the next in line. Seattle and Tacoma will follow in early December. Rounding out the year will be Honolulu and Maui.

Sorry if your city isn’t listed but Sprint and Clearwire have not released their schedule for 2010 yet, so here’s hoping it’s on the list when it is made available.
