Sprint Epic 4G Passes FCC

The release of the Sprint Samsung Epic 4G is getting closer and closer each day. While there's no official release date yet, it just passed through the FCC.
The Epic 4G is Sprint's 2nd 4G handset (the first being the Evo 4G). This is Sprint's version of the Samsung Galaxy series with a sliding keyboard. The Galaxy is coming to all four major US carriers, and Sprint, so far, is the only one that opted for the Galaxy Pro (the keyboard version).
When do you think it'll officially be on sale? We all knew the discussion would arise sometime, which do you think is better; the Evo or the Epic?

Keyboards tempting but imo Evo ftw! HTC > Samsung. Samsung’s Android phones have been plagued with issues and they provide little to no support after launch. Hopefully this will change with the Galaxy series they seem to be putting a lot into the launch of these devices ( strengthening my theory that the other phones where just to test the water at the customers expense). Meanwhile HTC continues to drop phones that define the android experience and raise the bar. Epic will be nice and is great on paper just a little weary after all the friends and family I saw get burned with the Moment and now the Intercept. The Moment looked good too but I was glad I kept my Hero then, and I’ll keep my Evo now.
i saw Sprint’s commercial for this phone for the first time last night. it wasn’t as good as the Evo’s commercial.
The thing that sold me on this phone is the camera. I’ve been wanting a device that takes excellent pictures so I wouldn’t have to carry around my camera. I was actually considering the iPhone4, but have since decided to stay with Sprint, and pick this one up.
Finally! A ppc that works unlike all Dumb down htc phones! And yes! No more gpu garbage! This phone has a gpu with full hardware accelaration thats not bs. this has has the hummingbird cpu thats makes the sbbapdragon cpu look like a dinosaur! over 90 million million polygon push compared to 7 million on the Evo. Its like having a atari versus a xbox. Htc…. i hope you get run over by a duck.
A friend of mine has the galaxy is england and has no troubles whatsoever.. he was in the market of getting the I4 and decided this phone is head and shoulders above it. his decision was based on side by side comparison by his carrier right in front of him. it’s faster, the screen looks much nicer and ofcourse a bigger screen.
Just so everyone knows, both phones are free for him and he went for the galaxy
oh and 1 more thing, he grabbed the last galaxy and there was a line for it. The carrier had plenty of I4 stock and the line broke up when they found out the galaxy stock was done.
@bondosho… the galaxy has a 5 mp cam… the evo has an 8mp cam… doesnt that make the evo the better phone for cam?
@crazytalent, just becuase the MP’s are higher it doesnt mean the pictures are better. HTC’s camera lenses have always been sub par compared to the rest. I’m no expert, but all I think the MP’s are for is for printing bigger size pictures. You ever try to print a camera phone pic, it always comes out blurry and all distorted. With the increase in MP i think this makes it possible to now print them. I’m not an apple fanboy, but the iphone has always taken excellent pictures, and they just upgraded to 5MP. This is one of the reasons I returned my Evo. Don’t get me wrong the Evo was a good phone, but the pictures weren’t that great for me. Actually they were only great if i took them outside on a sunny day.
my touch pro 2 takes better pictures than my wifes evo. the lense plays a huge factor, not the MP
Lens, sensor, and cmos play a huge roll in camera quality. The higher the megapixels, the bigger the picture (and prints) will be on the screen. I happen to have the EVO and am ecstatic. This Epic looks outstanding though. I just might have to get this phone on another line just to test to see if I like it. If I do, I’ll give the wife my EVO, if not then…..I’ll have two phones….ftw!
@crazaytalent – A good example is this…you got a 20 gallon container with 5 ounces of water or a 2 gallon container with 2 gallons of water…which would you choose? the MP is jsut the size of the container, not the actual water inside it…
Thats said I can’t wait for the phone to come out already :p
I would like one without a keyboard please (like the vzw version).
Will this phone have a $10 monthly fee attached to it like the evo? That is a big factor for me. I complain about what I pay already, no need for a higher bill, in my case.
@green_knight – Yes there will be a $10 fee attached to it…
I haven’t seen a write up that says it will have a $10 fee like the evo. Where did you see this info? or did you call sprint?
@itster http://explainthefee.com/2010/06/29/talk-about-an-epic-fail/
@itster – http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=127059
So what’s the deal Sprint? Is every new phone you sell that has a big screen and 1Mhz+ processor gonna have this bogus $10 extra fee from now on?
I read some where that all 4g sprint phones will have the $10 fee
as per sprint, you’re not pay the $10 fee for the 4g feature, you’re paying for the premium features on the HTC Evo
The $10 supposedly was b/c the evo had the capability to d/u data faster and thus use more data.
If that is the case, the I would assume that any new phone that had fast d/u speeds to have the surcharge–at least until the negative pr hurts the bottom line (which will probably happen coincidentally when the other networks have 4g/lte)
I guess I’ll stick wtih my Touch pro 2, then. Any what new advanced phones might be coming out soon for Sprint that don’t have a $10 monthly fee attached?
@green_knight – All the top end phones will be with the $10 fee…only ones without it will most likely be under 1ghz and no 4g..
@gTen – Bummer. No 4G in Colorado yet.
