Rumor: Now HTC HD2 Not Compatible With Windows Phone 7?

First we heard rumors that the HD2 would be upgradeable to Windows Phone 7, there was even a picture of it (which was determined to be fake). Now we're hearing that it is not possible to upgrade it because it lacks the three button requirement for WP7. Its not that it lacks the three buttons, it actually has five buttons. They're also saying it lacks other hardware requirements, but haven't said what those requirements actually are. They should release some of the hardware requirements later this month at MIX10 Developer's Conference, so hopefully we'll have a definite answer by then.
In the mean time, you can always sign the online petition we talked about here.
In other news, Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Mobile 6.5 will be called Windows Phone Starter Edition, so even though Windows Phone 7 is coming out, development shouldn't stop on WM6.5

a bit premature as microsoft says to wait till MIX for full details
+1 let’s not start a mob riot with pitchforks and torches till we find out for sure.
Of course I’m getting my pitchfork sharpened just in case this is true…
does it really matter..even it its not ‘compatible’ im sure we will see mods incorporating win 7…and lets be honest..that why we’re on the site with our tp2–for some cool mods.
Specs are not final yet, any maker claiming that their phones are fully WP7 series compatable are blowing smoke. How can you say your phone works with something that you don’t even know fully what it will be ?
Sad to say, if true, I am not shocked.
@trancers21 –
doubtful and it will only work if a company is creating a rom for the device and that likelihood (save from downright reverse engineering) is nil
@DavidinCT –
Well I see this from a different side. First I am sure HTC knew about this phone and it’s requirements at least for a few months. So why not modify the HTC HD2 to have a search button? Second the US launch has not happen yet so why did they not modify the US version at least to fit requirements. I really think that it is really up to Microsoft to decide and I think they want new devices with the launch. I really hope they change their mind because I have an HD2 and I was about to purchase two more but now I am going to have to wait until I see that it is possible to get 7 series on it. I am willing to pay for the upgrade to my carrier or HTC so why not make it happen?
This is no different than the TP1 coming out last year but NOT getting a 6.5.x update, or the Apache coming out the year before the Mogul but not getting a 6.1 update. This is the nature of product updates.
Windows Phone 7 is a clean break, and to do that, the software and hardware requirements are very specific. Deal with it.
Since they didn’t sell it as a future Win Phone 7 device then there is really nothing to complain about. They never promised it would be upgradeable. I don’t get why everyone would be mad about not getting an upgrade they were never told about. It’s like be being upset my PC today won’t run Windows 8 when it comes out. However as said, I’m sure they will be a port of the UI (if possible) regardless.
@rolandroland – because it’s annoying.
Good grief… guys! Its not because there are 5 buttons!
Its pretty obvious why it won’t be compatible (at least officially):

I was going to get the hd2 and down my blackberry, oh well! I’ll stick with the tp2!
