UPDATE: This review is part of our big giveaway, remember to post a comment to earn an extra ticket to the final giveaway lottery!

Seidio Online was kind enough to send me a sample unit of their Convert Combo (formerly known as the Rugged) for the HTC EVO 4G, and I have spent the last week using it and I am now ready to share my thoughts.

First off, the first impression you get is that the case is quite large for an already large phone. The minimal clear plastic packaging holds the belt clip/holster, a Surface hard shell, The silicon outer shell, the ballistic plastic skeleton, and a static cling screen protector with cloth and plastic smoothing tool. The Surface case, the screen protector and the overall packaging had instructions on how to assemble all the various parts that make up the Convert.

Putting the case together was a snap. The Surface case fit snugly and with just that case on, the phone still fits into my leather belt holster. Once you slip on the silicone cover and then snap on the skeleton, though, you can kiss the old stand-by leather holster goodbye. The only way you are clipping this to your belt is with the provided holster that places you phone screen down for protection. The clip on the holster has a lock on it that works surprisingly well and will keep your phone from falling out if it gets snagged on something.

One feature that I like, since I have to be outside for my job from time to time, regardless of the weather, is that the silicone portion of the shell has covers for the headphone jack, the camera, and the USB and HDMI ports. These fit snuggly, but are easy to open and move out of the way when you want to plug in or use the camera. One drawback: When you have the full case on, you cannot use the kick stand, it’s sealed up inside.

Now, since I have kids, I have had my 4 year old play with the phone with the full case on. While he is very good with my phone, he does tend to drop things from time to time, and with the Convert Combo on, there has been literally nothing he has been able to do to damage the phone. The raised edges protect the screen from impact and the rest of the phone’s body is covered in silicone and ballistic plastic. The skeleton reinforces the likely impact points nicely at the corners and sides, giving your phone a high degree of protection in case of an impact or a drop. Very reassuring when your kids take your phone to feed their Angry Birds addiction…
One thing that I noticed was that the contours of the case and its size actually make it easier to hold the phone for an extended period of time. It fits the hands naturally and is still totally usable. You might think that the plastic skeleton would make it slick, but it is positioned in such a way that your hand comes into contact with the silicone more than the plastic, giving you a good solid grip.

Overall, after having used several different cases that were either just skins, or shells similar to the Surface, I will say that the Convert Combo is easily the best case I have used on my EVO. It fits well, and allows you to use the phone just as it was designed (except for the kickstand, of course…). The strength and durability of this case make it a must for anyone with small kids, or if you are going to be in an environment that could put your phone at risk. It looks good on your phone, but most importantly, it provides solid protection for the EVO for those who need it the most.
Thank you to Seidio Online for providing the product sample!

Many of us have been holding out for a tablet that can pretty much replace our desktop/laptop at home. Asus seems to have come up with a great product that can do just that for some of us. This powerhouse includes features such as 10.1-inch gorilla covered multitouch display, 16gb/32gb storage, 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, 1gb of ram, dual cameras, up to 16 hrs of battery life and an HDMI-out port.

Asus has not released pricing or release dates, but there have been pre-order screens at Best Buy for $399 that have been removed. Can this be the beginning of Android taking market share from the Windows desktop/laptop market?

Is this what you GEEKsters have been waiting for?
What do you think? The inquiring minds at PPCGEEKS want to know.

Check out some of these amazing Specs:

Eee Pad Transformer TF101

• NVIDIA® Tegra 2 1.0GHz dual-core CPU for excellent multitasking & 1080p video playback
• Android 3.0 Honeycomb O.S. with Adobe® Flash® 10.2 support*2
• Full QWERTY keyboard, touchpad input with Polaris® Office® for mobile productivity
• 16*1 hours long battery life for all day computing with docking station
• Brilliant IPS panel with ultra-wide 178⁰ viewing angle made from scratch resistant and super tough glass
• One year of Unlimited ASUS WebStorage, two USB ports, SD and Micro SD card readers for easy sharing & storage expendability
• 3D stereo with max bass response with SRS premium sound

More Specs and capabilities here: ASUS

Update:

It seems there was a good reason for Best Buy to take the pre-order site down. The right price is nearly $569 U.S for the 16 gig version without the keyboard. The keyboard is priced around $75 U.S.

Here is the right pre-order price in England: Amazon

This is great news for Sprint customers! Verizon Wireless recently started doing this on most of their smartphones and looks like Sprint caught wind and decided to do it also.

I myself do everything to avoid paying the extra $100 everytime I need to upgrade to another smartphone. It seems Sprint is starting to realize they’re are losing some money on hardware sales by pushing their customers towards other vendors such as Best Buy, Radio Shack, Amazon and a few other to avoid those Rebates.

Is their next step to be more competitive in their hardware pricing?

Geeks, what do you think? Let us know by responding in that cool white box below.

Apple is facing major supply issues with the new iPad 2, with some customers having to wait 4 to 5 weeks for delivery. Apple has had shortage issues in the past with the second generation iPhone 3G for more than a month and up to 3 weeks on the Iphone 4 according to reports from NPD Group.

According to Stephen Baker, an analyst with retail research firm NPD Group, compared the shortage to the iPhone 3G situation. Most customers would rather hold out for the second generation of the product after the flaws have been resolved on the first generation as was the case with the first iPhone.

According to Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Co., the shortage is due to the “tremendous demand” for the Ipad 2. Rhoda Alexander, an analyst at IHS iSuppli, agreed with Marshall and added the disaster in Japan is not effecting delivery of the iPad 2. Alexander also anticipated these issues when they heard only 100 iPads would be available in each store.

Marshall also finds it interesting that Apple has not released sales figures on the iPad 2 since launch. Typically Apple likes to show those numbers off, such as it did after launch last year when 300,000 were sold on the first day of sales.

According to Reuters, the launch of the iPad 2 will be postponed in Japan while the country focuses on recovering from the recent disaster.

Did Apple announce the iPad 2 too early because of the XOOM announcement? Is this why they are having supply issues?

Tell us what you think about this situation

Microsoft has finally started rolling out the NoDo update after quite a few delays. The latest Windows Phone 7 device (HTC Arrive) has this update and seems to work well. The NoDo update has other functionality updates also, including apps search on the device, performance improvements, Wi-Fi functionality and Outlook e-mail client.

The update is still missing the highly sought after Multi-tasking feature. This function should be added when Microsoft rolls out Mango. Take a look at the video of the copy and paste feature below.

Hey Geekers! Have you ever been outdoors with the need to charge a cellphone or any type of electronic device without an outlet anywhere in sight? Well, the portable Solio Battery Pack & Solar Charger may be right for you. The compact unit is capable of charging a variety of different devices ranging from cellphones to digital cameras. The connectors included with the package are:

Micro-USB

Mini-USB

LG3

Female USB

Sony Ericsson

Samsung3

Nokia

The Solio website also has more connectors available if the one you’re looking for is not included.

I’m working on a review for the device, but the midwest snow is not allowing for enough sun, so i’ve done an unboxing for you to get an idea for it. Enjoy.

The phones themselves look promising, with a look of Dolby Mobile on the HTC Surround, and an AMOLED screen on the Focus. Specs both are not bad, the 5MP camera a standard to WP7 and expected. Screen sizes look nifty and we can’t wait to see what else this means! More photos below!

Read on to find out more about the exciting Dolphin Browser HD and its various add-ons (Such as our PPCGeeks Add-on) in this Pocket PC Geeks Review by Bradart!

Let’s face it: The stock browser on your shiny new Android device lacks…a lot. Well, let’s go ahead and fix that, shall we?

Get It!

You can visit this Appbrain Link or scan this QRcode to get Dolphin Browser HD from the market:

So go ahead and download it. Hurry! You’re missing out!

Now That You’ve Got It

Alright. You have, by now, gone to the market and downloaded this baby. Now it’s time to fire it up. On the first run of the app, you’re going to be confronted with a welcome screen:

After the welcome screen, Dolphin HD Will take you through a small intro that shows you some of the features and basic usability tips. You can’t use the browser without going through this, so I won’t bother showing you the screenshots. Once you get through the intro presentation, you will be looking at the dolphin start page:

Good times. Let’s take a look at some of the features.

Some Of The Features

Bookmarks and History

One of the things that always peeved me about the stock browser was how it handled the history and bookmarks. It was just a little bit cumbersome and awkward. You had to hit all those buttons and go through those menus, making selections all willy-nilly, but none of that matters now! Dolphin has made a much better experience for this situation. With the page all the way zoomed out (or scrolled to the far left of the web page you’re on), swipe the screen to the right (past the realm of the webpage). BAM!

It’s just better. If you want to add a bookmark (assuming you’re wanting to add the page you’re currently viewing), just click that star right there. Easy-Peasy. It’s so simple, in fact, that i have nothing more to say about it.

Multiple Tabs(Windows)

You have been given the ability to view up to 8 different web pages simultaneously. That’s probably quite few more than you should need but it’s always nice to know that you CAN. You have probably noticed, by this point, that you have a tab bar up on top of the page. Click on that big ol’ plus sign. Well done. You are now the proud owner of 2 tabs. In addition to the tab bar interface, Dolphin has given you a much more “Impress your friends”ish option. Remember how we slid the page to get to the bookmarks panel? Same thing, other side. That’s your add-ons panel. We’ll cover the add-ons later. for right now, direct your attention to the downward arrow at the top right. Pull it down.

This way, you can see a preview of the page you’re switching to. It is, admittedly, a laggier way of doing things. In my experience, this window switching panel is pretty jumpy, even on my Evo. It’s definitely not bad enough for me to quit using it though. Look at how cool that looks.

Add-ons OMG!

This is pretty huge. Dolphin HD has support for a whole bunch of add-ons. Swipe left to open up that panel we talked about earlier. Yeah, that one. You can click the puzzle piece at the bottom to get to the main add-on screen.

Now, in my screenshot, I’ve already got quite a few installed. They have a huge range of functions and I’m not even going to attempt covering them all here. Just click the “Get more Add-ons” button and go nuts. Seriously, there’s a ton of them.

Gestures

On the bottom left of the browsing window, you’ll notice a picture of a hand. Tap it. This is your gesture area. You can click the gear on the bottom right to see what gestures are built in, or you can make your own custom gestures that can perform a wide array of functions. I made this one:

Which ended with my browser doing this:

Cool. Go nuts on this one, too, because this is a really quick and infinitely useful feature. Sometimes it will have no idea what gesture you’re trying to do, but you’ll eventually get it. It works for me most of the time.

Under the Hood

I won’t go through all of them, but you get a lot more options to play around with in the settings menu. Like, A LOT.

Play around with it. Dolphin browser does a lot and the best way to learn is to play.

Now I’d like to take a moment to talk about

Your New Favorite Dolphin HD Add-on

You may have noticed the PPCGeeks icon in my screenshots or when you were looking through the add-on gallery in Dolphin. If you haven’t already installed it, you’re fired. Just kidding. But, seriously, get out of here.

The add-on gives you access to the PPCGeeks RSS feed so you’ll be able to read my posts ANYWHERE (and posts from the other awesome writers for PPCGeeks, I guess ;)). To use it, install it like any other add-on. Then, go into the main add-ons window and click it. That was easy.

->

Immediately, you will be transported to a dream-world of magic. A place where you always know what’s going on with the mobile device world.

The End, You Guys

Thanks for reading, and I hope it helped! I definitely recommend Dolphin HD and the PPCGeeks add-on. Download and try it yourself! What do you have to lose? Nothing, that’s what.

It’s time for the first PPCG week in review, where we take a look at what’s happened throughout the community this past week. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll shake your head in dismay. So let’s kick this thing off!

The inaugural week for the WP7 Gang has been quite exciting. Founded by darren.wlson1 last Saturday, they have brought much verve to the WP7 world. Enthusiasm was curbed at news of the circus going on in the development team for WP7 and the fact that their true product won’t be complete for 5 years, but Darren has been rallying the troops. Stay tuned to see how the gang fares.

We’ve had another explosive week in the HTC Evo 4G forums. Anyone who’s been to that jungle and made it out alive to talk about it can tell you how hectic it is in there. From seemingly millions of posts on how it is the worst device known to man, woman, child, or beast, to the same number of posts swearing the Evo is the best device ever made by anyone in the history of communication, we’ve had posts about the screen, 4G, widgets, apps, games, keyboards, and we’ve had some great chefs step up and cook some really nice looking ROMs. This device has been out less than 2 weeks and the Evo forums are closing in on 27,000 posts!

This past week has also seen lots of polarization on the iPhone 4. From the iFans to the iHaters to the iDon’tCares we’ve seen lots of commentary on news stories of specs, pre-orders, and rumored CDMA handsets.

The awesome photo contest started by Mr. X has gained popularity. Check some of the amazing shots there, and don’t forget to post your own! There are really some amazing ones!

The 2010 Playoffs thread has also been quite active, and there’s been some heated back-and-forth going on in there. The Lakers, having ended things last night, have essentially put an end to this saga.

We’ve had some awesome posts this week, from long to funny to just plain crazy!

We also had PPCG staff meet up, with some awesome pictures.

It’s been a pretty busy week here at PPCG, stay tuned for this upcoming Thursday when Laos brings back the podcast! What do you think about this past week in the PPCG? What did I miss that happened right under my nose? What would you have liked to have seen happen?

Stay tuned for next Friday’s Week in Review! It’s sure to get better and better and better!

If you haven’t noticed, PPCGeeks has changed our style throughout the site. We were rocking the old style for about 6 months, but we weren’t completely satisfied with it, so over the past month, we’ve been working hard and bringing you something hopefully everyone will enjoy. We will try to go over all of the changes with you so everyone is on the same page. Please give us your feedback in the comments!

Uniform Look:

The first thing you’ll notice is the uniform look across the site (with the exception of the Wiki for now). We have a RSS icon, a Twitter icon, and a Facebook icon in the header of every page. The color scheme is constant throughout the site as well.

Spam Management:

About a week ago we added some more spam prevention which has been working really well. The staff has noticed a huge reduction in the number of reported posts. One of these checks email addresses, IP addresses and usernames upon registration against a database of known spammers. Another one checks a user’s first two posts and will flag them if they look like spam. We still use the email verification during registration too. We are still using the multiple account prevention too, which will flag accounts which appear to be multiples of an existing member, which happens quite a bit for spammers.

PPCGeeks Homepage (https://www.ppcgeeks.com):

This page has a fixed width with the news articles in the left column and a right sidebar.

On the left, you’ll see a “Featured” slideshow will which let us display some featured articles at the top for quick access. This will include things like site announcements, podcasts, etc.

For the news articles, the layout is much cleaner. Each article will have a thumbnail image which is the same size for every article. The text next to the image is an excerpt from the article. You can click on the image or title to view the entire article. Under the title, it still shows the posted date, author, a category, and the number of comments.

You’ll also notice there’s page navigation at the bottom of the articles. The homepage will show 15 articles and you can switch between pages to view past articles.

In the right sidebar, you’ll see the same ‘About Us’ box with the links to navigate different features of the homepage. There are a few ads as usual. Whenever we offer special discount codes in the PPCG Store, we’ll post them in the sidebar box. There’s also a Categories box to easily sort the articles. The Archives box filters the articles by month and is minimized by default. The usual ‘Popular Tags’ box is there as well. The larger the tag, the more popular it is.

PPCGeeks Forums (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com):

In the forums, you’ll notice the old vBulletin style navigation bar is back. This keeps the forum navigation separate from the rest of the site.

If you go to the bottom left of any forum page, you’ll notice a style drop-d0wn box, which should satisfy everyone’s cravings. We offer 6 styles. We have the three fixed width styles and three fluid width (for widescreen monitors). You have the default style, the dark gray style, and the classic PPCG dark blue style. You’ll notice the fluid styles keep the same uniform look as the rest of the site, unlike before when it was just a plain-jane vBulletin style.

You’ll notice a Podcast box at the bottom of the forum homepage as well (under the Who’s Online box). Whenever our Podcast is live, this box will give you the option to tune in, otherwise it’ll show that its offline.

Another new feature is called MyForums. If you’re familiar with the New Posts button (that will show you the new posts from all forums). If you subscribe to some forums (while in the forum, click Forum Tools then ‘Subscribe to this forum’, you can select a notification option (No Email Notification is fine). After you do this to a few forums, you can click on the MyForums link in the navigation bar and it will list all of the threads and stickies in the forums you’re subscribed to. This will let you easily follow your device forums or any other ones you’re active in.

You’ll also notice that everyone now has a default avatar to make the posts look more uniform.

We’ve also added a search engine listing to the Who’s Online section.

Each forum category is now spaced apart.

We’ve merged the Chef’s Corner with the ROM/OS Development forum and made it open to the public.

You can also exclude forums from the homepage. This will exclude them from view, and also the New Posts button, but if you search the site, it will still include those in your search. To exclude forums, go to your UserCP, then Edit Options. Near the bottom you’ll see a list of the forums. You can hold down CTRL to select multiple forums to exclude. It will automatically exclude all subforums as well (so if you exclude HTC Devices under Windows Phones, it will hide ALL of the HTC Devices).

If you never noticed it before, you can tag threads or posts as Favorites. These will show up in the navigation bar for easy access. To tag a post, there’s a link “Add Post To Favorites” near the post date and time. For threads, its located under Thread Tools.

PPCGeeks Wiki (http://wiki.ppcgeeks.com):

The Wiki hasn’t changed much yet, but we hope to integrate a similar style into the Wiki.

We encourage everyone to develop the Wiki and add anything you think is necessary (device specs, FAQ, etc).

PPCGeeks Chat (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/chatbox.php):

We’ve gone back to the old Java IRC script and replaced Flashchat. You can use your own IRC client and connect to #PPCGeeks on irc.freenode.net.

PPCGeeks Podcast (http://podcast.ppcgeeks.com):

We have a new dedicated page for our PPCGeeks Podcast. It features a Java IRC room (##PPCGP on irc.freenode.net) and a flash Shoutcast player (yes, we use our own Shoutcast server now).

Its also available in the Zune Marketplace as well as iTunes.

PPCGeeks Store (http://store.ppcgeeks.com):

We still have our PPCGeeks Store as well, which is through MobiHand.

Be sure to check it everyday since they offer a “Deal of the Day”, which is an app at 50% off!

Future Improvements:

We are always looking at ways to improve the site. We are planning on enhancing the donation system to help encourage site donations and skinning and improving the Wiki. If you know of any enhancements (whether its WordPress, vBulletin, or MediaWiki), feel free to share them with us for future considerations.

We’ve also made some tweaks and improvements to the server, which has made the site run faster and even lowered the server load. We will continue to look into ways of maximizing our resources to give you the best PPCG experience possible.

Bugs/Problems:

As with any big change, there’s bound to be issues that arise. Please report any issues in this thread.

Last Words:

The staff has worked hard on these changes and we hope everyone enjoys them. We know we can’t please everyone, but we hope to offer enough options so we can come close! We are more than just forums and news, we’re a community of ‘Geekers. This site was founded on the basis of helping out others and providing us a way of getting the most out of our phones. We’ve grown at an exponential rate over the past few years and this site continues to be the biggest community for Windows Mobile CDMA phones. We’ve expanded our forums to include Android, WebOS, Blackberry, iPhone, etc, and hopefully this will help us stay ahead of our competition in the future and give every smartphone user a home!
