Updating to Gingerbread (Android 2.3) blocked by Google?!
Android Community was just sent a tip that is very interesting and may make some of you upset, if it's true. If you're an Android user waiting on the Android 2.3 (aka Gingerbread) update to be available on your device, it sounds like that wait may never end.
What's been said was that Google is forcing manufacturers to hold back the update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread on ALL handset models until April, possibly even May so that they can sell more Nexus S devices. Does this make sense to you? Maybe they manufactured way more than they thought.
If this is the case, surely Google will announce it, or not? We wish we could get some sort of official announcement but it doesn't look like that may happen. What do you think? Let us hear your thoughts in the comment boxes below.

Does this make SENSE to you…..
WTF?!!!……….google never does stuff like this. This is a move HTC would make, but never google.
Well, google did just get a new ceo. Maybe the new ceo is doing this or it was the previous ceo who ordered this. I guess we will see what happens.
I know it hasn’t been pushed out to the Nexus One yet, which is their other developer phone.
I also read where there were some bugs with SMS that were just recently fixed, so I’m wondering if they’re working on a few other bug fixes before it goes out to more phones.
Like everyone else said, this doesn’t sound like Google unless they have something else planned (like the Google Music service maybe?)
@kgbcapthowdy – fixed just for you!!!
@Courtney1985 – why thank you, i can sleep tonight. thank you again
This is just crazy. I’m with mindfrost that it’s bugs and kinks that need to be worked out first. ORRRRRR, it’s because of the lawsuit Oracle has thrown at Google for using (line for line, code for code) java in the android OS.
Update:
Those damn pesky java files Oracle was refering too apparently aren’t apart of android’s OS!! WOOHOO! Get em’ boys….throw Oracle to the matt and ask em’ who’s daddy!!
If there is a delay its because its not final…or maybe they want to sync it more with Honeycomb before making it public on devices…Selling of Nexus S is not what Google is after 100%! its a developer phone…its never been about sales and never will be…
Maybe Google is trying to clean up their code and get rid of those illegal java snippets before the other Gorilla (Oracle) sues…
@gTen –
Roger that. Gingerbread is simply not ready to be pushed out. There’s no hidden agenda by Google to maintain Nexus S sales momentum.
update after update after update, big deal
@gator352 – My impression was that Oracle’s property might not be on any Android devices, but still exists in the Android ecosystem and Google violated the terms of the license in a pretty egregious way.
Looking at the actual technical aspects of the lawsuit and what claims are being made, Oracle will probably come out on top here. We may not agree with the fact that it’s possible to pursue IP violations in this way, but the law is what it is, and breaking silly laws is still breaking laws.
How silly those laws may be is up to debate. Generally, users don’t like intellectual property rights, while owners of intellectual property tend to demand those rights. Even hardcore FOSS advocates at least acknowledge that people have the right to CREDIT for the work, if not payment. Stripping all signs of who owned proprietary code is pretty bad, yo.
Kinda makes sense to me. Although Google is not known for holding back on updates., since the Nexus S is their flagship phone it would make sense for them to focus on selling as many of them as possible. I would love to see 2.3 released for the EVO, but I dont think it would happen
