Can Mobile Phones Think For Us? Introducing Nokia Situations beta

Can a mobile phone think for you? Have you ever asked yourself this question? I sure have! Technically, the phones already do a lot of ‘thinking’ and store a lot of information we ‘should’ already know by heart for us. Developers are working harder to make our phones do even more ‘thinking’ for us while on the go.

What do we mean more ‘thinking? A while back a news writer at Gigaom wondered “What if the phone, using a location beacon, could sense if we were in the office and change the entire profile of the phone based on that information. What if it could turn off the Lady Gaga ring tone when you were at work? Or read your calendar and see that you were in a meeting and switch to silent mode?” Have you wondered these things yourself? I’m sure some of you have.

Being the first who are trying to make this possible, Nokia has introduced an application called Nokia Situations beta. This application essentially transforms the phone based on the situation you are in. As the company describes it in their Nokia Beta Apps blog, this is an experimental application which users use it to define how they want their phone to behave in different situations such as when you’re in a meeting, sleeping or playing with the kids. With the application running in the background, the device automatically senses the situation you are in (e.g. based on time, day, location, available networks) and adapts to it according to your preferences. There may be other applications that come close to these activities but nothing just like this one!

Features of Nokia Situations beta:

  • Change Ringtones
  • Answer missed calls with SMS
  • Save Power
  • Change UI theme / Wallpaper
  • Open a Web bookmark or application

Do you have a Nokia device to try this out on? If so, give us your feedback. Others who have tried it suggest there are a few bugs and the application does need work but they are very impressed so far. Some think this is a great time saver and hope that developers will reach out to other platforms if they are successful. Take a look at the video below for a preview of this new Nokia Situations beta application. Let us know what you think!
