Google Earth is Pretty on Nexus One (and the Occasional Droid)

Google Earth, the world map on steroids has been released for Android-powered smart phones, well one of them, (kinda sort-of).  The application is now available on the Android Marketplace for phones sporting 2.1 or above; IE:  the Nexus One and Rooted/Modded phones.

When Google announced the Nexus One in January, they used Google Earth to demonstrate the capabilities of their brand new flagship device.  As might be expected, this application is some serious eye candy.  It is as pretty as a peacock and it works intuitively.  Simply speak ‘Mount Fuji’ to the voice search and away it goes, traveling at supersonic speed to Japan and zooming in to the volcanic snow covered crater at Mount Fuji’s peak.  Once there you can enable the ‘look around’ feature then use the pinch to zoom to view the surroundings, select a Wikipedia or point of interest link, view a photograph or simply follow the road to Tokyo.  As an added bonus Earth works with GPS to follow you as you drive through mountains; however it is recommended that users watch the road and not the high resolution display.

Reports have been coming in from Motorola Droid users saying that this app runs great on their rooted and modded phones.    If you have a rooted Droid, you can find instructions in the PPCGeeks’ Motorola Droid forums for enabling access to Google Earth on the market place.

Earth is a definite must-have for those who need a three dimensional map that is graphically superior to every other map on earth (pun?)   This application is excellent at  impressing friends and selling phones.
