Wal-Mart announced yesterday that it will be joining the cell phone business by providing two plans with limited phones. It was developed in cooperation with TracFone Wireless and has been running a pilot program since last summer in about 234 stores, but will now be nationwide.
They will offer 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts, and 30mb of data for $30/month. The 2nd plan will be unlimited voice, data, and SMS for $45/month. These seem too good to be true, but with their phone selection, I’m not sure how much competition there will actually be. If they offered some high end phones then there could be some real competition, and perhaps cause the major providers to lower their prices.

that was a response?
That’s from a bot that scans our site for news.
i might leave sprint 4 wal mart lol
Isnt tracfone a GSM company??? if so, this service might be great news for gsm people who want the same rates as metro pcs…
If you could use the service with existing phones, I’m there. $45/month for unlimited?! Please!! As long as that data is 3G of course…
Same as straigh talk service that walmart sells now

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? SERIOUSLY? Could they possibly shove their noses into any other industry? Just hearing they may be their own cell phone provider made me sick. I can’t believe it. I’m just at a loss for words.
haha yeah no kidding! next walmart is probably going to brew their own beer!
Oh…that’s great. Another market Wal-Mart can decimate in every city and then turn into a low-wage slum business.
will they put up their own towers or will they use another carriers network? like when virgin mobile was using sprint’s network.
Its strange how so many could possibly find this a negative aspect, if they do it im there if you dont like it then you can keep over paying your current provider. And as far as low-wage slum provider, maybe you should check the wages of similiar job providers and hassle them in the same manner you love to throw poo poo at Wal-Mart…ie Target, Kmart ,Sears, just to name a few.But I will save you the trouble and tell you that their wages and benefits are among the best in the industry according to several independent sources ,unlike the wholly Union supported dirt that is thrown out by groups like wake up Wal-Mart…take a look and see who pays their bills!!
Oh well, no matter 400 billion in sales speaks for itself the people have spoken and they won…lol
I don’t know if you read the news or anything, but you would know about Wal-Marts business practices, business model and know what I mean by slum-wage business. WalMart has made incredible profit off of moving into low-population areas, undercutting all local competition on price thus driving them out of business and then paying notoriously low wages.
