There are many GEEKsters out there looking for some numbers from MS to help them make a decision on their next smartphone. Judging by some of the numbers released by MS, things are moving in the right direction. The number of developers downloading the needed tools to develop apps are great considering this is a new platform.

What’s very interesting is the number of apps MS has released does not include the lite versions, ebooks, wallpaper and the apps that have multiple languages count as 1. We all know that the Android and Apple market counts each one of these apps as a seperate app.

Last year many were calling WP7 the new Kin. The numbers are proving many of the nay sayers very wrong.

What do you GEEKmeisters think about this development?
What will the other platform fans say?
Inquiring GEEKS want to know..

Microsoft has finally started rolling out the NoDo update after quite a few delays. The latest Windows Phone 7 device (HTC Arrive) has this update and seems to work well. The NoDo update has other functionality updates also, including apps search on the device, performance improvements, Wi-Fi functionality and Outlook e-mail client.

The update is still missing the highly sought after Multi-tasking feature. This function should be added when Microsoft rolls out Mango. Take a look at the video of the copy and paste feature below.

In the following months, the mobilephere will be overtaken with several new devices and most of them will be running the same underlying chipset design. As any mobile power user will tell you, support for HD video and hardware-accelerated graphics are must-haves for future devices. What will most of these devices have in common? Several things actually. Nearly all will be based on the ARM Cortex A8 chipset, which means they are running the same basic chip with manufacturer-decided variations and branding schemes.

What is most exciting about this chipset is that HD video and hardware-accelerated graphics are now a reality for everybody. As a bonus, this chipset design also meets the ‘required specs‘ that Windows Mobile 7 purportedly has.
More than likely this will wind up being fake, but the Chinese site QQ.com has posted a spec sheet for the successor of the HD2, dubbed the HD3. According to the sheet, its expected release date November 2010 with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU.

Other specs of interest:
– Running on Windows Mobile 7 – This would make sense if WM7 is on schedule for their planned release by the holidays.
– Features 1GB of RAM and ROM with 16GB of additional on-board storage – The RAM and ROM is possible since the T-Mobile HD2 was just reported as having this upgrade. The internal storage is less likely since that’s a feature of the Diamond series, not the HD.
– Screen is 4.5″ – Isn’t the 4.3″ screen on the HD2 large enough? This thing would really be a beast.
– Screen is 1280×800 pixels with 16 million colors and multitouch – This is could be very possible.
– Battery is 1800mAh – Given the specs, it makes sense to have a large capacity battery.
– Camera is 8.0MP with LED flash – The HD2 is 5MP, so this is also a possibility and would make it one of the better camera phones out there.
– Ports: HDMI, USB 2.0, and 3.5mm – A HDMI port would make the device thicker unless it uses a dongle of some sort.
– Includes WiMax and 4G (LTE?) radios – Could they really put LTE and WiMax in one device? Would they? This is unlikely.

So, what do you think? Rumor or fact?

We’ve already seen the Morotola Backflip that’s coming to At&t this year, but now its time for another new design concept from Motorola, the MOTOSPLIT. Taking a queue from Nokia (there was the Nokia 5510 and the 6800), the rendering to the left (click on it to view the full size) has a split qwerty keyboard and will be running Android.

The guess is that the keyboard will slide open rather than flip. Its also rumored to have the highly popular 1GHz Snapdragon processor. It is expected to arrive on At&t in the third quarter this year.

There’s been a lot of hype over the new 1GHz Snapdragon processor that is just now starting to show up in high-end phones like the HD2 and Nexus One. Now that it is becoming the hottest processor available, Qualcomm has announced its successor, with speeds of 1.3GHz and 1.5GHz.

The first one is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8X50A, a 45nm version of the current chip and clocked at 1.3GHz. They will begin sending that one to manufacturers for testing later this January, with devices being released by the end of the year.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8X72 is a dual-core Snapdragon with twin 1.5GHz Scorpion cores, and is also expected to be out before the end of the year. There’s no clarification is this processor will be in manufacturer’s hands for testing by the end of the year, or if that’s when we’ll start seeing devices released.

As we’ve known for a while, the Acer Liquid Android device has a processor from the Snapdragon family, just as the HD2 has, however, it has been determined that the HD2, or any WM6.5 device for that matter, cannot play 720p HD video. This is obviously not a Qualcomm issue since the Snapdragon processor can obviously handle the playback on Android, so the limitation boils down to Windows Mobile. One source says the issue may go away once Windows Mobile is upgraded to run on the Windows CE 6 core instead of its current Windows CE 5 core.

It looks like Qualcomm doesn’t want to wait around for that though. They’ve posted a job opening on their LinkedIn page asking for some talented developers to solve the decoding issue on Windows Mobile.

The folks over at PhoneScoop had the opportunity to review the recently announced LG eXpo, coming to At&t. Overall, it got a pretty good rating with a few downsides. They said the phone feels solid, but they had some complaints about the resistive screen and the fingerprint sensor/D-Pad.

In addition to unlocking the phone, the fingerprint sensor can also be used to control access to other applications (SMS, E-Mail, etc). One thing they were really impressed by was the keyboard, calling it “fantastic”. There’s no pictures of LG’s UI, and Phonescoop reports that its mostly a stock WM6.5 with the optional LG UI available.

“Turning to the projector, which they call a “neat accessory”, they note it was large but battery friendly and projected what was on the screen. They noted it was not what they called “super bright” but even in a well-lit environment they were able to make out everything it projected. The projector is capable of a 40 inch image at 8 feet.”

The Acer beTouch E100 and E101 both have 3.2-inch WQVGA touchscreens, 12mm thick casings and the same Qualcomm 7225 528MHz processor. There’s also a 2-megapixel camera, Windows Mobile 6.5 with IE Mobile 6, and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. The differentiating factor is 3G: the E100 has quadband GSM and dualband HSDPA support, while the E101 makes do with quadband GSM and EDGE.

Meanwhile the Acer beTouch E200 has largely the same specifications as the E100, but adds in a slide-down numeric keypad. It keeps the HSDPA support, but boosts the camera to 3-megapixels, adds GPS and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR support.

Finally, the Acer neoTouch S200 gets Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.8-inch WVGA touchscreen, quadband GSM and triband HSPA. There’s a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, WiFi b/g and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, together with GPS, an accelerometer and 3.5mm headphone jack.

There’s rumors that its probably a GSM device, but Verizon has been branding the term 3G on their devices lately as well.

So if this really is the Android cousin to the Leo, and if it comes to the US around the same time, which flavor will you get? WinMo or Android?
