Dual-Core Processors Coming Soon!

The next era in smartphone processors is upon us. There's already quite a few phones out there running the Snapdragon processor, and now there's also many running the Hummingbird processor. The next era will be dual-core processors, and there's two heavy hitters coming over the next 6 months. First of all, we have the Nvidia Tegra 2. It features a dual-core 1GHz processor, a Nvidia GeForce GPU and a 1080p HD mobile video processor. Next up, we have the Samsung Cortex A9 processor, which also features a dual-core 1GHz processor and 1080p video recording at 30 frames per second. Samsung also states that it has five times the graphic performance of the Hummingbird A8 processors (which many people will say has better graphics than the Snapdragon processor).
Samsung has said that the A9 will be available to "select customers" in Q4 2010 and it will be going into mass production in the first half of 2011.
We can expect to see the Tegra 2 in smartphones in Q4 2010. LG has announced that it plans on using the Tegra 2 in its Optimus line of high-end smartphones in Q4. LG is also planning both Android and Windows Phone 7 devices under the Optimus line.

I want this for my Evo
I love the future…
This will probably be in the iphone 5 first.
pretty soon cell phone cameras will be as good of a quality as regular video cameras! I bet this actually is cutting into camera sales.
1080p at 30 frames per second on your phone which is always with you??? *drool*.
I bet eventually they will have tri-core processors, and one of them will be a dedicated processor that only serves the camera function.
So basically you’ll have 2 processors for the phone itself, and a 3rd for just the camera.
Think of how stable!!! Aw crap….The extended battery would only last 30 minutes…….
Now if battery technology can advance like processor technology!!!
Holy begesus!
@NIKKG, if manufacturers are planning on releasing these chips in their devices as early as Q4 2010, what make you think the iPhone 5 will be the first to get it? Doesn’t the iPhone typically release in June? i.e. Q2 2011…
since Samsung makes iPhones CPUs, the Tegra2 will be out first.
Okay just so NOBODY is confused including the person who wrote this article…
Dual Core processors does not mean two processors….one processor, with two cores on the chip. It’s a faster chip design, not two processors built into one chip.
The article refers to a single phone as having “Duel Core 1ghz processors” ..plural, with an S. It’s one processor, two cores.
The phones may be able to capture 1080p video but they do it with a censor that is a small fraction of the size that camcorders use… This translates to poor low light and in general just poorer video quality. Some camcorders even use 3 CCD imaging chips to campture video… Not likely we will see a phone camera come close to a nice HD camcorder any time soon. Besides, I really like having a 10-12x optical zoom for video, and I have yet to see a camera phone with anything higher than a 4x optical zoom.
The sad fact remains that this is still nothing special. The ability to manufacture multi-core processors small enough to fit into phones has been around for a while. Processors have reached up to 500 cores on a single processor, though these are mostly government contracts, and the best technology always goes to the military first.
I agree with Hellz….there is only so much you can cram into a small package…and until we see a huge leap in battery life, camera quality, and American 4g networks…we are looking at the latest scam from Sprint lol
Come to think of it Sprint will probably wait another 6 years before they upgrade their smartphone lineup with a good phone.
eThats nothing new. We have been having dual core for 4 years now. X6800 was the first. But sadly… a failed gpu with it. And we had a failed gpu on all htc phones until now with the Evo in which under performs.
now i wanna see a fully functional xp port
@orangekid – samsung does not make iphone processors, apple makes their own now. get with the times people!

Dude, battery technology has already advanced far past what we are using now. Over 1-2 years ago a battery was developed that could hold a 40 hour charge on a laptop that was performing typical tasks during that 40 hour period.
The problem is getting this technology to the consumer level.
Another technology that would help with battery issues if it were to be released at a consumer level is low-voltage over bluetooth. Essentially, you can charge your phone (or other device) via bluetooth and would not ever need to plug it in. Get in the car and it’s charging. Walk in your house and it’s charging. Go to work, sit at your desk, and it’s charging.
Again, the production process needs to be streamlined to a point where it is cost effective to release the technology. When the need for better battery performance and the process by which the longer-lasting batteries are manufactured balance out, we will see the newer technology released to the whole of consumers.
Another technology/invention that has nothing to do with phones, but intrigues me greatly, is the aluminum alloy created a few years ago by a German laboratory. The metal has a light weight similar to the weight of aluminum itself, but it is three times stronger than hardened steel. That’s right!!! Three times stronger. It is also transparent. When a method for cost-effectively producing this metal in mass quantity is developed, we will likely see great improvements in the automotive industry, the “glass” industry (especially bullet-proof glass), and in many other industries. The possible applications are endless.

We have had dual cores, but I think the leap here is that the cores will be balanced. Normally the dual cores are heavy on the PDA side, and very light on the phone-app side.
I think this will be a great improvement for all. Especially now that we are getting some processing power here in the states.

Well, again we are looking at things that already exist.
Anyone remember the Samsung SPH-9000? I bet not. This was a device released in Korea years ago. It had a 5″ 800×480 display, a 1GH CPU, ran Windows XP Home, 256MB RAM, 30GB HDD, had a flip out two-piece keyboard, and also carried a 1xRTT/EVDO radio…and let’s not forget WiMAX which was already launched in Korea when this thing dropped way back in 2006.
Can you say, “technology”?
One of our biggest problems in the US is over regulation by the Gubment. Once we can overcome this technology hurdle, we will bring consumer availability close to actual availability.
Link for the SPH-9000 if anyone cares to see it.

Remember that this thing dropped in 2006.
This is awesome! But I certainly hope that batteries get better. More and more processing power everyday, however, very little improvements in battery life. Great speed but only 2 hours of battery life.
I will hold my breath on Nvidia. Tegra this Tegra that, and to date I still am waiting to see a phone with a Tegra GPU in the mainstream.
Dual, triple, quad core….makes no difference. If battery life isn’t improved, then what’s the point? You have a smoother, faster running phone, with less battery life than everyone else.
Improve the battery life, then I’ll be interested. If not, I’m sticking with my Diamond.
I would love my hands sweating knowing my phone multitasking activities is running flawless from the Friday morning I take my phone off the charger to that Saturday evening I go out and to see my battery indicator @ 58% all while runninng the sling player texting occasional fm radio with a amoled screen physical keyboard 4g all the things sprint an these companys know we want oh don’t forget a great front an back camera projector etc…not for nothing I think windows phone got something up there sleeve!
Sorry htc your power mangment sucks. I think motorla has my money I think htc should look in to
@JQuill –
are you even serious or are you just trolling for fun?
@randomwit –
Dude you bluetooth charging sounds awesome. Also the aluminum thing sounds like it would reduce blind spots with cars but unfortunantly I doubt that will take off for vehicles. Considering people still look at vehicles like there more then a means of transportation. Vehicles need to be asthetic to sell. But then again maybe I am wrong, the prius does well and that thing is ugly.

Crap we are behind. Lol I recall hear about the US creating the first VCR and china or something making VCR’s sellable to the pubilic. Basicly at first VCR’s cost way to much but dear old china or whoever it was came in and said who wants a VCR we make them affordable. So it didnt matter who made the first VCR because the one making it purchasable was the one making all the money.
Why do we allways seem to fall short on these aspects. This contry needs money and we need to start selling our inventions and no I am not talking about the old military weapos we invented years ago and thus have become outdated so we decided to sell them to another country. Look at the car, we may have started the buisness of selling cars but the Japs made it there buisness to sell better cars. The Honda civic is one of the most reliable cars on the market and it sells well. Amarican cars on the other hand with the exception of Ford need handouts because we keep pumping out crap. There is alot I dont understand but from what I can see we are fking up royaly. I know this went off topic, sorry
