Hey there Geeks! The folks over at Otterbox happened to send my way a Commuter Case for the Apple iPad, so I took the liberty of tearing it apart.

Figuratively, of course.

For those of you who don’t know, Otterbox is a growing company out of the Ft. Collins area that we’ve been taking a detailed look at for a few weeks now. We’ve looked at their EVO, Epic, Hero, and now iPad cases for all shapes and sizes. They sell almost every device case for almost every model and we’ve seen a big emphasis on quality by the company

at $64.95, this case is a real number on the budget, but when it comes to defending a $500 – $1000 device, it comes down to being worth it!

The case features three main components. A strong, durable outer case, a flexible, protective inner piece composed of a silicone-rubber type of composite, and a free screen protector for cover those 9″ of real estate.

If you are looking for a proper case for a proper device, i cannot suggest any other than the Otterbox for the big spenders. It’s stylish (letting you see the lovely brushed metal back with the Apple logo,) clean, and well built. It also comes with a removable guard so when you’re on the go, your pin connector on the bottom won’t end up damaged. You can remove it when charging (it doesn’t stay part of the case except when attached, so don’t lose it!)

Last but not least, PLEASE take caution when applying it. The protectors for your headphone jack, and power button at top will get stuck on the plastic, and you have to apply A LOT of pressure to get it in. I suggest you take caution but not damage the device overall. Once you get it on, don’t take it off unless you’re sending your device in for repair. otherwise you may lose the quality of the build by breaking it.
In the end, I love this case. I think it protects the device yet still keeps that sleek, cool design Apple spent millions on developing. If you got the $65 plus shipping lying around, go out and get it!

A couple of weeks ago, the folks at Otterbox were nice enough to send me their Impact case for my Samsung Captivate (a Galaxy S phone). I’ve tried to put it to the test over the past couple of weeks, as much as you can with a case. Their Impact series is a “simple silicon case that absorbs impact and deflects bumps and dings”. It is roughly $20, which is similar to most other cases in this class. When I bought this phone, I also bought the Body Glove case from At&t, which is similar to this case, and is my only real comparison.

I won’t post a bunch of pictures because I’m sure most of you know what it looks like. We’ve reviewed a few of these over the past weeks for different phones, all with good results. With the Body Glove case, people were reporting small scratches on the body of the phone, which were caused by the case. I noticed a few of them on my phone after using the Body Glove case. The Otterbox Impact case seems to fit better and so far hasn’t caused any scratches either.

If you’re looking for a thinner case that offers some protection, then the Impact series is perfect for you. It comes with a screen protector too. It doesn’t offer the same protection as the Commuter or Defender series, but it also isn’t as thick as those. The phone still fit in my pocket easily and was easy to get in and out.

I would highly recommend this case to anyone wanting a low-end case with decent protection.

Thanks to our friends at Otterbox over the course of the past few weeks I have had the privilege to test and evaluate the HTC EVO Commuter Series Case, and I must say this product is a must have for any one who owns an EVO. Please read more for the full review.......

Not too long ago I felt the longest two seconds of my life when I accidently dropped my Evo and watched it fall to the ground. Thanks to our friends at Otterbox now you never have to worry about it again.

Over the past few weeks I have had the privilege to test and evaluate the all new HTC EVO Commuter Series Case from Otterbox. The Commuter Series case is now available (after a long anticipated wait) and willing to protect your HTC EVO from the elements to include scratches, dings, dust and bumps while allowing full usability of the device. For $34.95, you get a triple-layer case that comes with a self-adhering protective film and features silicone port plugs, added shock/bump protection, and separate cutouts for the camera, flash, and speaker.

The Commuter provides two-layers of protection, a smooth silicone and a tougher polycarbonate shell that latches on top of the silicone. This will add some considerable bulk and weight, which may not be ideal for users who prefer to keep the phone slim. The extra shell appears very durable and beneficial should the phone be dropped or at risk for scratching.

As I mentioned earlier I have tested this case for about three weeks now and I have to say for the most part I am very satisfied with the product. Within the first few hours of having the case on the phone I accidently dropped the phone on some concrete and to my surprise there was no notable damage to the HTC EVO, the only damage done was a few slight scratches to the phone case that were barely even noticeable. The case is not waterproof but will provide some protection against rain. Using the case day-to-day I have to say I love everything about it, well everything except the awkward chin that covers the USB and HDMI ports. I think this part could have been designed a little bit better. I would have liked to see the silicone shell fit a little snugger. The silicone cover is a little lose and allows dirt and lint to get underneath it along the edges, not to mention the silicone cover is a lint magnet but wipes off pretty easy with any cloth. As I mentioned earlier the case does add some extra bulk and weight to the slim and elegant HTC EVO but in my opinion is worth the protection of the case.

The Commuter Series is the first of several cases OtterBox has planned for the HTC EVO, so this isn’t the last you’ll see of the company here on PPCGeeks.
