Recently quite a few carriers have started putting caps on their data usage, most of which are set to 5GB. When you go over this cap, you’re usually charged overage fees, which can add up very quickly, especially for multimedia phones and smartphones. Now, instead of charging overage fees, T-Mobile will be throttling your connection speed once you hit the cap.

“Subscribers with a 5 GB per month webConnect plan will no longer be charged per megabyte overage fees, but will simply see their connection throttled. This should mean while entertainment use is limited, IM and email should work perfectly fine.

Subscribers on the 200 MB limit, who arguably need this much more, are unfortunately not as lucky, and will still have to pay overage, but at a lower rate of $0.10 per MB instead of $0.20, which can still add up pretty quickly.”

Verizon Wireless has released its 4th Quarter 2009 Revenue results and there are some stunning statistics. Keep in mind that all this occurred in just 4 months time.

162 billion text messages were sent or received (that’s 15,625 texts per second)

4 billion picture/video messages were sent or received

38 million music and videos were downloaded

Verizon made $16 Billion in Mobile Data revenue (up 31% over 2008) and it accounted for 31.9% of Verizon’s total Q4 2009 Revenue (26.5% increase from the same period the previous year).

As texting, picture messages, and mobile data usage increases, these numbers will be on the rise. I am going to go out on a limb and say 180 billion text messages will be sent or received on Verizon for 1Q 2010. Post your guess in the comments below!

P.S. Did you catch the Lady Gaga reference in the title?

Since At&t has come under fire recently for its network’s abilities, At&t has now said that it may have to charge the heavy iPhone data users extra. AT&T claims that the high bandwidth usage, brought on by iPhone users, is causing network issues such as dropped calls, slow 3G network and problems connecting to the network. Consumers with the unlimited data plan may have to pay a penalty if they use more than 5GB a month soon.

A spokesperson for AT&T, De la Vega, said that 3% of the smartphone users are consuming 40% of the wireless bandwidth in the country. Most of the bandwidth is being used up by streaming audio and video applications on smartphones, which offer constant Internet radio steaming or YouTube video steaming.
