Yesterday, Verizon announced that it plans to turn on 4G LTE in 30 major NFL cities by the end of the year. There are 30 NFL markets considering a couple of teams share the same city. Their plan is to first upgrade the backhaul to the cell sites, which is a necessity when it comes to offering the fast speeds LTE has to offer.
Next up is At&t. There’s not too many details in their announcement, but they said they plan on launching their LTE network by mid-2011 and that it would cover 70-75 million potential customers at that time. They also said they have spent over $700 million in LTE capital expenditures this year, and that they plan to go “far beyond” that in 2011.

I’m sure most of our readers would disagree with this idea, but Dan Hesse seems to think that a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile is still a good idea. He’s gone on record with Financial Times by saying the company is still considering a merger with T-Mobile “down the line”. You may remember last year that Sprint and T-Mobile were in talks of a merger, but T-Mobile’s parent company, Deutsche Telekom, feels that T-Mobile is doing fine on their own. Read more…

Sprint likes to advertise that it is leading innovation by starting the nation’s first 4G network with WiMAX, but now it appears that they’re second guessing themselves. With the other three major U.S. carriers confirming they’re going with LTE as their 4G solution, Sprint is probably getting worried about their decision to go with WiMAX, which would leave them the only carrier with that technology as of now. On Wednesday, Sprint issues a Request For Proposal (RFP) from 4G equipment manufacturers, which included LTE. Read more…

By now, we all should know that Verizon’s 4G plans are to go with LTE (Long Term Evolution) instead of WiMAX like Sprint. Sprint’s first 4G-compatible device, the Evo 4G, will be available in a few weeks. Verizon’s CEO, Lowell McAdam, has confirmed that Verizon will be releasing three to five LTE-compatible handsets by May 2011. He wasn’t able to confirm which manufacturers will produce those devices, but he said “all the major manufacturers we’re talking to today are making the transition to LTE”.

While T-Mobile is presumably years away from offering 4G to its customers, its European parent company, Deutsche Telecom, is looking into how to bring T-Mo’s LTE to the states. In a partnership with New York hedge fund, Harbinger Capital, T-Mo hopes to buy some air space and shoot out those lovely Mbps to the adoring fans. The group was also to have said that a 4G satellite network is being investigated, to provide 4G to a larger footprint. No deal has been penned, but T-Mo should have no issue waiting a little while longer, since it has been pushing 21 Mbps over its 3G and is expanding that in the mean time.

T-Mobile and Clearwire sitting in a tree: S-P-E-C-T-R-U-M-I-N-G First comes 3G, then comes 4G, then comes the Spectrum sharing! While this may appear ludicrous at first sight (Sprint owns majority of Clearwire, T-Mobile is looking at LTE for 4G while Clearwire builds it’s competing Wi-Max 4G network), it may be possible. The CEO of T-Mobile …

While this may not be the biggest news for most of the community, the first live and active passover of a data connection between a CDMA and LTE (Long Term Evolution) device has been completed. This means that a device that has both a CDMA and LTE chipset, respectively, handled a data connection and switched …
