Android Taking Market by Storm

As the rivalry between carriers and phone companies heats up, Android seems to be winning. Android just keeps getting more and more buzz. Apps are continuously rolling out for it. The talk about the iPhone has been swamped by conversation of the Droid and Hero, especially the Droid. I don't know how Verizon does it, but their advertising is incredible. From the marketing war with AT&T to marketing the Droid, they are reaping in customers, and in turn, Android users. If that weren't enough the constant updates rolling out from Google, and the talk of the "real" Google phone has got the Android scene buzzing even more. All of this combined means a larger user base, and since it is an open source platform, more hacks and modifications. Devices can be "rooted" and then the core files can be edited. With Android becoming steadily more popular, what will the future of other smartphone operating systems be? Will Apple make their iPhone more customizable to compete? Will Microsoft get into the widgets game? Only time will tell, but hopefully that time is short otherwise Android may have completely taken over.

Sprint Hero & Moment To Go Straight To Android 2.1

Sprint has confirmed that the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment will be skipping Android 2.0 and will be jumping straight to Android 2.1. Users will still have to wait until the first half of 2010 for the update though. Click on the image to the left to view a screenshot of the Twitter post.

HTC May Unveil Hero Sequel At World Mobile Congress

FierceWireless has picked up a rumor that a HTC executive let it slip that the smartphone manufacturer will debut the sequel to the popular HTC Hero early next year at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Patrik Andersson, the head of HTC in Sweden, said in an interview with the website IDC.se that the new Android phone will be available in Sweden shortly after it is unveiled.

An HTC spokeswoman declined to comment.

The next question is, will this be one of the devices in the recently leaked 2010 roadmap, and if so, which one?

HTC Releases Hero Kernel Source Code

The folks over at HTC have quietly released its Kernel Source Code for its Android Hero, which could lead to custom ROMs and more development for the device.

Cellular South to get the Hero

We just received a tip that US carrier Cellular South will be releasing the HTC Hero Android phone. It will be available on November 15th for only $99 with a 2-year contract!

The will also be offering a new smartphone plan upon its release:

Smartphone Unlimited (Unlimited Voice, TXT, Data) – $79.99/mo + Add a 2nd Smartphone for half-off ($40). This means you can have 2 unlimited everything smartphone lines for $120/mo, which is a great deal.

HTC Hero Coming To At&t Early 2010

It appears as though Sprint's exclusive HTC Hero won't last very long. The people over at PhoneArena have been tipped that the HTC Hero will be coming to At&t in early 2010. Some people have said the carrier isn't jumping on Android because they felt it would compete with the iPhone. There were no specific dates given, but if this is true, it will be At&t's first Android phone.

Update 9/3/09 8:30am CST: Sprint has officially announced the Hero will be released on October 11th for $179 with a $100 mail-in rebate and a two-year Simply Everything plan (sorry SERO users). Source: CNET

We were all are waiting for an android based device to hit Sprint. And then we heard of the Hero. People who wanted Android knew that their dream came true. But the form factor of the European version had a “Chin”. The area below the screen with the trackball and buttons juts out sharply.

Not to worry, Sprint has once again saved our Hero.

An Asian based site, 8080.net claims that the following pictures are of the Sprint version.

The Main Features:
A 3.2 inch HVGA display
HTC Sense
GPS, Digital Compass, and Gsensor
A 3.5 mm jack!
5 MP camera
It will also most likely have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
microSD memory card slot
And all the good Google apps.

You ask when this is happening? Hopefully soon. Rumor has scheduled for October 11, the same day as Sprint is also rumored to be planning on releasing a second Android-based device, the Samsung InstinctQ. All we know is that the FCC recently approved a CDMA version of the Hero with EV-DO. Unfortunately, the FCC didn't specify which wireless carrier this is for.
