Computer scientist from North Carolina State University have discovered a weakness in smartphones running Google’s Android operating system that allows attackers to secretly record phone conversations, monitor geographic location data, and access other sensitive resources without permission.

Devices sold by HTC, Samsung, Motorola, and Google contain code that exposes powerful capabilities to untrusted apps. These “explicit capability leaks” bypass key security defenses built into Android that require users to clearly grant permission before an app gets access to personal information and functions such as text messaging. The code making the circumvention possible is contained in interfaces and services the device manufactures add to enhance the stock firmware supplied by Google.

The researchers wrote in a paper (PDF) scheduled to be presented at next year's Network and Distributed System Security Symposium. “We believe these results demonstrate that capability leaks constitute a tangible security weakness for many Android smartphones in the market today,” said the scientist. “Particularly, smartphones with more pre-loaded apps tend to be more likely to have explicit capability leaks.”

A diagnostic app named Woodpecker was created by the scientist and ran on eight smartphones from the four vendors. The most vulnerable was HTC's EVO 4G device, which was found to leak eight functions, including its precise geographic location finder, camera, text message service, and audio recorder. HTC's Legend came in second with six leaks. Samsung's Epic 4G contained three leaks, including the ability to wipe data and applications off the handset. Google's Nexus One and Nexus S contained one leak.

The researchers found that the manufacturer-supplied enhancements offer a way to circumvent this permissions-based model. In a video demonstration, they show how an app they designed is able to access audio-recording and SMS functions on an EVO 4G without first getting approval from the user. As a result, the app is able to turn on a recorder that collects nearby audio or phone conversations. The app is also able to send unauthorized text messages.
 

 
The researchers said both Google and Motorola have confirmed the vulnerabilities in their handsets, but that HTC and Samsung “have been really slow in responding to, if not ignoring, our reports/inquiries.”

Google and Samsung have reportedly postponed an October 11 event that was expected to include the launch of Android "Ice Cream Sandwich" and the Samsung Nexus Prime. Samsung's U.K. division provided a statement to Engadget and SlashGear, which said:

"Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11. Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product. We would ask for the understanding of our clients and media for any inconvenience caused. We will announce a new date and venue in due course.”

We sent a message to the Samsung officials in the U.S., who basically said they could not confirm nor deny the Samsung U.K. statement.

I would think the CTIA would be the perfect place to release such a device especially with the recent release of the Apple iPHone 4S. I guess we will have to wait for more clarification from either Samsung or Google on why the CTIA was not the right time to announce a new product. Some have speculated the delay might be related to the passing of Apple Chief Steve Jobs, but nothing has been confirmed.

The flagship Samsung Galaxy Nexus, also known as the Nexus Prime, is said to be a Verizon exclusive when it launches (likely sometime this quarter). Here’s what it will have, according to Boy Genius Report:

• 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD with curved glass (1,280 x 720 resolution)
• TI OMAP 4460 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex A9 processor
• 1GB of RAM

Update: Engadget has reported a new batch of rumored specs from over at the GSM Arena, it seems a Google employee has said that the 4.64-inch Super AMOLED HD display mentioned above is just about the only spec that made the final cut. The The processor is more likely to be a dual-core 1.5GHz Exynos with an accompanying dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics chip. That rear facing camera will be 8 megapixels with a newly beefed up sensor. The handset should also ship with a 2,050mAh battery. So I guess we will have to stay tuned as the rumor mill keeps spitting out new specs on this Android Monster.

The big news just keeps on coming, first Google buys Motorola and now Samsung has officially hired the creator of CyangenMod to their ranks. It was not too long ago Samsung pronounced their support for developers by giving away free Samsung Galaxy S2 phones to CyanogenMod developers to help support further Android development on Samsung phones.  And from the looks of it, Samsung is impressed with Cyanogen's work.

Now with this comes a lot of questions to mind, like will other devices still be supported or will Cyanogen still continue developing CyanogenMod to begin with? Well fret not, according to Cyanogen's Facebook page, he has gone out to reassure his users that CM will remain his side project and will not be affiliated with his new employer.

From the looks of things, many are welcoming Samsung's support of the community. But I would like to add a possibility for something more then what it looks. Before I do, I want to make clear on my stance with Google buying out Motorola. I think that it is a positive thing and I do not think Google will use Motorola to compete with their OEMs as most of their money is made off Adsense, the profit margins on hardware is hardly worth Google endangering their bread and butter.

What does this have to do with all this? Well according to Cyanogen, his take on CyanogenMod is not that of another ROM but a fork of Android, aka another Android distribution similar to how Cent OS is to Red Hat (for those familiar with Linux). So could it possibly be that Samsung is trying to fork Android and distance itself from reliance on Google? Samsung has already attempted to stop using Google for their GPS services and swap to SkyHook only to be blocked by Google at the last minute. This sudden change caused a lot of problems for samsung's GPS in the original Samsung Galaxy S and a lot of bad press.

By putting Cyanogen on a team to fork Android, it can give a lot of power to Samsung who can then make Android work better with their hardware and enjoy the benefits iOS enjoys by having full control of both software and hardware. Samsung is already famous for adding CPU optimization to their TouchWiz framework. (not to be confused with TouchWiz Launcher)  And with this, Samsung also have better control of pushing out timely updates.

And in the future, in an unlikely event Google decides to take more control over Android, Samsung can continue development on their own.

Again, I have no proof, this is merely a speculation on my part with the limited amount of information available. What do you think?

According to this article found at Computerworld, it looks like Motorola has been purchased by Google!! What will this mean for Windows Phone 7? Nothing good, that is for sure!! Not only does it add a powerful developing market to Android but it isn't likely we will see any Windows devices coming from Motorola either.

Motorola has been viewed as one of Microsoft's saviors in the Window Phone 7's development area and this could be a huge hit to Microsoft. With Motorola out of the loop (at least partially if not totally) Nokia will be the big developer for Windows Phone 7. Some experts are forecasting Android and iOS to be the long-term survivors while  Windows Phone, Blackberry, and HP's WebOS will fade away eventually. Before this it was optomistic Windows Phone would survive as well, but it will be an even tougher road now. (a great write-up can be found here)

Now....it is important to remember that it isn't finalized yet and Google is not looking to create a 'Google-made' device like the iPhone. They want to run Motorola as a company unto itself, incorporating Android into a lot of devices but not having one corporation take over the other. (more details here)

With iPhone 5 on the horizon, Google needs to do something to catch/keep our interest in Android and in the highly competitive marker of smartphones aside from new devices the best way to shake things up is a new OS!!! Google is trying just this with Ice Cream Sandwich!

I just made the leap from Froyo to Gingerbread on my phone (haven't even used Honeycomb yet) and here we are looking at a new OS rumored to come out as soon as early October to compete with the highly anticipated iPhone 5.

According to this article some of the new features/improvements of ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) are USB host support and the highly anticipated music and movie rentals. Google is rolling out their movie rental service to devices soon and it will consist of movie rentals starting at $1.99 per rental. You have 30 days to view the movie from download date and 24 hours to complete it after you start to view the movie (more information found here). The music service will be like a cloud server to download your music collection to for use on your phone.

More information will be sure to come out as we get closer to release date, but with a lot of big phones closing in on their 2 year anniversary (upgrade time) and the projected release of new devices soon, I anticipate quite the buzz for a while!!

I am not sure how many members we have from London here, but Google is looking out for you (and hopefully a sign of things to come). The new version of Google Maps has been released and it has the London Underground and transit maps included in it!!

This may not seem like big news for members outside London, but if you stop and think about it, this could possibly set a fantastic precedent for anyone using a form of public transit anywhere! Can you imagine getting off the plane in unfamiliar territory and needing to stay a while for some reason, or needing to get to a meeting across town fast? If Google Maps keeps developing this system I could easily see bus, subway and maybe even Taxi company (probably as quick-links) routs, schedules or contact info automatically available upon launch of the app. Google Maps will detect where your at and determine the best route to get to where you set as destination and map out the schedule for you:

This release is for Android, IOS and Blackberry devices, but as an added bonus to Android users, you can install Transit Navigation (beta) which enables alerts to be sent when it is time to transfer or get off the bus or train.

Google has been updating a lot of their applications lately, but the one that jumped out at me first was Gmail!! If you use Gmail and have an Android phone take a look  at what I found over at PhoneScoop:

Among the positive changes is the ability to turn off the pushing of mail except for priority mail. This will help save battery life and enable quicker access to the important stuff.

You can also customize the tones of mail according to the folder they fall in, very nice for prioritizing what you need to read without even having to look.

Another really cool option is the ability to show contact images, mostly glam, but really cool, like looking at an SMS listing!!

Now....the bad....To be honest, the only bad thing I have found so far is the fact that third-party notification apps won't work now.  So you can't have an unread count on the main screen with apps like SMS Unread Count. Minor I know, but if you have a good theme going on this may be a bit of a downer for you!

Gmail users....what do you think? Will this help save precious battery life on your phone or just add to the cool look when showing off to friends?

So Today we find that Android has a new fiend in the world. This one will record your calls and listen to your fantasy baseball talk; this should be nothing new for Android users - a Trojan that is - we have had several the past 6 months... With users travelling the back area of the world of Android Markets could easily catch this.

It has not been reported in the wild yet, and may not max your credit cards out but significant others, and corporate users might want to use this on suspicious people. So basically keep your eyes and ears open on what you download and what it does.

So PPCGeeks, keep yourself aware, watch what you do and if you install risky programs be prepared for the costs. What do you all think on these mobile phone Trojans, and malware? Tell me below!

So it seems Symantec did an independent study of mobile operating systems. They attempted to measure how secure Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms are, and also determine how the mobile systems stack to today's desktop operating systems. Symantec claims that these mobile platforms are much more secure than today's popular desktop operating systems, though the firm does suggest that the key variable as always is the "human element".

"Today's mobile devices are a mixed bag when it comes to security" said Carey Nachenberg, Symantec Fellow and Chief Architect, in a statement. "While more secure than traditional PCs. these platforms are still vulnerable to many traditional attacks. Moreover, enterprise employees are increasingly using un-managed, personal devices to access sensitive enterprise resources; and then connecting these devices to 3rd-party services outside the governance of their enterprise, potentially exposing key assets to attackers."

While Symantec does not come right out and say who is better in security it is pretty clear they favor iOS more than Android. It says iOS' app screening procedure plays a HUGE role in the platforms security and also says the platform's architecture makes it better at resisting mal-ware attacks and data integrity attacks.

So PPCGeeks, it seems that iOS is better in security than Android; of course this is all relative and nothing is official as it is always changing in the mobile world. This update is intended to improve battery life and keep the screens' backlight on while playing back voicemails, which was an annoying problem before if you use a PIN, password, or pattern style lock screen.

I don't know about you, but anytime I can get an update, small or not, for an app I use often that says it improves battery life and fixes bugs, I'm all over it.

Google has been working hard, to try and present the ultimate design and concept for what a smartphone should be. Recently introduced was the Nexus S from Google, the first phone to run Android 2.3, Gingerbread. According to exclusive details from our friends over at BGR, Google’s next Nexus device, possibly called the Nexus 4G, is going to be quite a device to behold with all of the latest and greatest specs you might expect. Read on to soak in more info..

According to details from BGR, it's believed that the Google Nexus 4G will feature a next-generation dual-core 1.2GHz or 1.5GHz CPU, probably an OMAP 4460 or a, ultra low-power 28nm Krait-based Snapdragon instead of the rumored NVIDIA Kal-El processor. The display is said to be a 720p HD “monster-sized” screen. As reported in an earlier article, it's safe to say that no buttons will be present on the face of this device. Everything will be on screen and software-based, providing much more screen real estate, without increasing the devices' dimensions.

Other features we can expect to grace this device include, a 4G LTE radio, 1GB of RAM, 1080p HD video capture and playback, a 1MP front-facing camera, and a 5MP rear facing camera. The 5MP camera is said to be much better than previous generation cameras, especially in low light conditions. The Google Nexus 4G will run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and is expected sometime near Thanksgiving.

Is this just a reference design for Ice Cream?

So last week we brought up an article of Apple just copying it's competition, well today folks it seems Google may be doing the same thing. With Microsoft going to one UI for Windows Phone 7, Xbox 360, and Windows 8; it seems Google is going to use the same "Style" of formatting for their screens.

Last month, Google held their I/O conference, where all things Google happens including Android news. They have the "sessions" page where you can go watch all the keynotes and talks that went on during that time period. Which is very similar to Microsoft MIX. Now, this might be old news but still interesting to me as a Microsoft fan person, but the Google I/O and Metro theme look similar? Then, again let's remember that this idea could have been out long ago and we are just seeing this "refresh" of an UI out for all. But remember Microsoft filed for patent rights on the Windows Phone 7 Metro theme when Windows Phone 7 was still a hot unseen item!

Now here is even a further thing to ponder. Straight from Microsoft Page, and wait for it...YES! Google Wallet - to close to call for my books - but they sure do look similar.

With that all said I would like to see if their are any issues coming to Google for possible copy of Metro UI. What do you guys think, is the picture above close enough in similarity to cause a patents right issue? You be the judge, and tell me below fellow Geeks!

So it appears that after months of talking about bringing Gingerbread to the HTC Desire - HTC throws in the towel and says it is not possible... It appears that they can't deliver on their promise because there is not enough memory on the device to give them "acceptable" user experience with Gingerbread (2.3) and Sense UI...

Now for you users that have not rooted and flashed a custom ROM on the device - it appears you will forever have that Froyo headache and be missing out on the Gingerbread yumminess. Now I have to raise this question - the HTC Desire is a 1GHz processor with 576MB Ram and 512MB Rom - but the Wildfire has a 600Mhz 512MB Ram and 512MB Rom - and it supports Gingerbread...HMMM what gives here?!

Tell us (and possibly HTC) what you think about this desicion to stop developing for this device...Will this in fact hurt them and make people question why it is not happening? Will this make you leave HTC for a different cell phone manufacture? Tell us PPCGeekers!

Verizon is in trouble! The FCC has been called into investigate Verizon blocking access to certain tethering applications. This would violate the open access provision that was put on the Verizon's C-Block 700 MHz spectrum that they won in the auction back in 2008.

Free Press filed the complaint with the FCC stating that Verizon had blocked access to tethering applications in the Android marketplace.

This being the case Verizon is violating the open access provision.

The open access provision states that that customers have the right to use devices and applications of their choice. By Verizon blocking the Android tethering ability, they are violating that right. By blocking this application, it restricts innovation and opens the door for other companies to follow suit.

Verizon's spoke person Jeffery Nelson claims that Verizon has not blocked the application and that Google in fact is responsible for managing the Android Market. Developers are required to meet with strict guidelines, but that doesn't mean that there aren't applications out there that don't follow compliance. Therefore Google is basically responsible for deciding what apps make it to the market and what apps don't. Nelson claims that Verizon hasn't violated any of the FCC regulations but rather has helped bring devices and third party apps to the LTE network through their open development initiative and their plans are to continue.

Free Press which filed the complaint has yet to make any remarks on Verizon's response, but a representative from Google did release, back in May, that on the Verizon and AT&T networks that customers could not download specific tethering applications from the Android Market. They say they're not blocking customers from the app, but rather it is unavailable for download on some carriers. They also added that if an application is a direct violation of the terms and conditions of a contract, it can be requested that Google make the application unavailable. This is usually only the case if the app is likely to violate the terms of data usage or something similar.

Verizon says LTE smartphone users can use their free uncapped smartphone tethering app (with a $30 data service package). This is supposed to allow the customers LTE tethering without additional charges.

Steve Jobs stole the WWDC 2011 conference this year with iOS5, iCloud, and the new functions of the iPhone. But I want to point something out. The things that Apple announced as their new features Microsoft ALREADY DID 8 months AHEAD of Apple. Yes folks - Let's just see who is copying who!

 “Feeling flattered today. Lots of great WP ideas headed to iOS. (Camera button/above lock, auto-upoad [sic] of pics, better notifications … ) … wi-fi sync, built-in twitter, background download service, short-messaging chats (though we do Facebook!)” Joe Belfiore

Responding to one particularly enthusiastic tweet about the volume button in iOS5 working as a camera shortcut, Belfiore pointed out "with a wp7 you get a dedicated camera button..that wakes the phone from sleep and humps u to a camera." He also couldn't help but mention that it had "been shipping for 8 months!"

There's certainly plenty of overlap in the usage dynamics we've seen of iOS5 so far, though how much of that is idea sharing and how much is the various platforms shifting to a central point of "good" design is unclear. We have a feeling people wouldn't be so quick to label Apple derivative if the company itself hadn't made such a song & dance about others firms copying their idea.

Ok PPCGeeks, I call BULLSH&T here. Apple is copying other people's ideas. First iMessage - can you say Blackberry Messenger. Second Camera button - Windows Phone 7. Third - iCloud - Google Music & Microsoft Zune...HMM How about Apple gets their act together and says what they really are doing. "Apple Running out of idea's - so we just use our competitors". But tell me PPCGeeks - what does this all mean to you?

This past Thursday, Google unleashed their new mobile wallet platform and completed field tests in New York and San Francisco. This new platform, (a rehash of the older Google Checkout) will allow people with certain NFC phones, to pay for merchandise in retail shops by tapping their phones against a payment terminal. Does this seem futuristic, convenient, or just unsecure?

In the beginning, Google Wallet will support Mastercard credit cards from CitiBank and users can pay for items at over 120,000 U.S. shops including Macy's, Walgreens, Subway, Noah's Bagels, American Eagle, Bloomingdale's, Peet's Coffee, Toys 'R' Us and many more.

Another launch partner is Sprint. Being that it sells Google's Nexus S phone, which is currently one of the only phones in the U.S. with the ability of using the new Google Wallet. The Nexus S supports NFC, an open standard backed by many companies including Microsoft, Visa, Sony, Nokia and AT&T. First Data Corp., a unit of the Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. private-equity firm, has been delegated to be the program's trusted service manager, which loads a consumer's payment card credentials to a secure chip, through a process called over-the-air provisioning. On another note, Android now supports NFC technology and additional phones are due out with this feature included, as this year progresses.

Google will not be taking a cut of the transaction revenue from Google Wallet payments. The company said it intends to make its' money from it, by running a coupon system from within the Wallet application itself.

"We're extending an open invitation to merchants and ecosystem partners like payment networks, carriers and banks to join us in creating tomorrow's best shopping experience," said Stephanie Tilenius, vice president of commerce for Google. "It's important to realize we're just getting started," Stephanie, said in a presentation. "This vision will take a while to come to fruition."

In case there is still debate or question, of whether the physical buttons may be removed from Ice Cream based devices when they start to arrive, perhaps this leak tells us something now.

You could take away buttons and add more screen real estate, which to some people, wouldn't make sense because a larger screen is much more expensive than putting in a few buttons. Therefore, from a manufacturing standpoint, it's either take away the buttons and just have a smaller device, or keep the buttons and have a slightly larger device. We'll see what they choose, but the leaked photo seems to have me believing that Ice Cream will be bringing devices with full frontal displays. With tablets beginning to flood the market, larger screens seem to be the way things are headed. What are your thoughts on this approach? Do you think this is the long awaited, rumored Nexus 3?

Google has been sued successfully and lost for use of Linux on it's server platform.  Although this may not be a huge loss to Google financially, this issue could extend to the Android platform. Bedrock Computer Technology has also sued AOL, Yahoo and Amazon to name a few.

Will companies like Bedrock Computer Technologies impede the growth of Linux?

Microsoft is rumored to be adding a newly popular feature in Windows Phone 7, and that is Near Field Communication, or NFC. It will supposedly ship on smartphones later this year, which means the software/OS part could be part of the Mango update. Nokia said that it would be implementing NFC on most of its smartphones in 2011, so this could be a push by the Nokia-Microsoft partnership.

For those of you that don't know, NFC is a mobile-payment technology. It would let your phone wirelessly communicate with a nearby device at a checkout counter to pay for your purchase. You could also redeem coupons, get loyalty (rewards) points, etc., all from your phone! Google enabled NFC in Android and released the first handset that supported it back in December 2010. Apple is also rumored to be working on it for iOS.

The technology group Ovum is predicting that by 2016 Android will drive the smartphone market growth by double. The predictions see Android owning 38% of the market, Apple owning 17.5 and Blackberry holding 16.5%.

What is really interesting about this report is Microsoft's very own Windows Phone 7 holding 17.2%. Way better than RIM?! Ovum is claiming that Windows Phone 7 will be the third place winner in the cell phone wars. Mostly due to the partnership that has been established with Nokia.

However, Ovum points out some potential rewards to the Nokia/Microsoft deal but also some risks. Ovum principal analyst Adam Leach states in the research release: “For Microsoft the deal provides a committed handset partner that has the potential to make Windows Phone a mainstream smartphone platform. The risk to Microsoft is that other handset makers may choose not to compete with Nokia and may turn their backs on Windows Phone.”

While we share all the small frustrations of Windows Phone 7, this report is a friendly reminder to some of the potential that it has in store for users. Who knows, if Microsoft and the carriers can get the update process down pat but if they can this looks to be something good for Microsoft!
