PPCGeeker pays Homage for renowned WinMo Chef!
The first smart phone I ever bought was the HTC Touch Diamond. I had no idea would lead me down the dark path of custom ROM flashing.
One day I went googling for a TouchFlo3D theme for my phone, found PPCGeeks, and the rest is history.
During my my time of flashing ROMs I constantly switched between WinMo 6.5, 6.5.x, TF3D and Titanium-only ROMs.
My favorite three ROMs were dareeseboy, OMJ, and NRG.
NRG roms were awesome because they had the theme that I loved built in, they also ran very fast and smooth, and were updated often (sometimes daily). I used to love seeing an update to the latest NRG ROM and tinker with new features.
Fast forward a year and an iPhone, MyTouch3G, and Nexus One later I find myself with an HD2. Imagine my Joy when I saw a custom ROM made by none other than NRG himself! He included so many variations of his ROM with different themes, different WinMo versions, and different home screen flavors. Then I noticed that this guy has cooked ROMs for virtually every WinMo phone out there!
Anyone who's ever flashed custom Windows Mobile ROMs knows of PPCGeeks user NRGZ28. He has continued WM6.5 development way after WP7 was released and kept our devices from being obsolete with new additions, themes, SYS versions, and more flavors than Baskin Robbins!
Sadly, however, the Age of NRG has come to an end.
This tweet was put out less than a week ago by NRG, and mark the end of an amazing age of wonderful WM6.x development for our devices.
PPCGeeks user teradog posted his own version of American Pie themed around the retirement NRG from WM ROMs in the TP2 upgrade NRG ROM thread and while browsing the forums I ran across it.
Take a look below and let's all remember the glory days of WM6.x custom ROM flashing!
(original post here)
"A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How those ROM's used to make me smile.
And I knew if he had a chance
That he could make those posters dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.
But february made me shiver
With only a monthly ROM that he’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn't take one more step.
I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about this quadband ride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day that Win...Mo died.
So bye-bye, NRG Sense UI.
Drove my browser to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were flashin’ Sense UI
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that it died.
"this’ll be the day that I die."
Did you write the ROM we love,
And do you have faith in PPCGeeks above,
If, the Wiki tells you so?
Do you believe in rock ’n roll,
Can that hard reboot save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to flash dance real slow?
Well, I know that you’re in love with SIM
`cause I saw you modding’ in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those background blues.
I was a lonely post-teenage broncin’ buck
With a gray TP2 and a modded ROM,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day... that WinMo died.
I started singin’,
"bye-bye, miss american UI."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that it died.
"this’ll be the day that I die."
The next few years we’ll be on our own
While Droid grows fat on a rollin’ stone,
But that’s not how it used to be.
When MaxSense sang for the king and queen,
In a coat later borrowed by Cookie homescreen,
With the widgets that came from you and me,
Oh, and while NRG was looking down,
Android stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
The verdict was returned.
And while the users flashed Energy ROMs,
GTX & TOG knocked it outta the park,
And we flashed Sencity in the dark
The day the music died.
We were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american UI."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day it all died.
"this’ll be the day that I die."
...
Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: ROM be nimble, ROM be quick!
Last flash on a 12 pagepool candlestick
Cause Energy ROMs & TP2 are our friends.
Oh, and as I watched them leave the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No android angel born in hell
Could break the WinMo spell.
And as thread views climbed high past that 3 million mark
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw 32,000 posts laughing with delight
The day the music died
He was singing,
"bye-bye, TP2 & Energy ROM."
Drove my browser to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were flashin' Sense UI
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."
I met a user who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sprint store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play.
And in the forums: the modders screamed,
The posters cried, and the developers dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The alarm bells all were broken.
And the one man I admire most:
Caught the last sys for the coast
The day the music died.
And they were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day it all died.
"this’ll be the day that I die."
We're all singing,
"bye-bye, WinMo Sense UI."
Drove my browser to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were flashin’ the last UI
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die."
fairwell my friend"
Indeed, I could not have said it better myself.

NRG and Mighty Mike were my favorite WinMo chefs. By the way, what ever happened to Mike?
@NIKKG, that’s old news he’s been gone since last September or so, and he had a little dispute with the staff of this site.
He was staff on here, he got into a dispute with the owner, they’re cool now.
He was a good chef, and worked a lot with Mr. X to put out some really awesome stuff for the TP2.
What about No2Chem? Whatever happened to him? And his counterpart over at XDA, I forget his name, started with a D I think, he was great too.
@Journeyjeans,
I think a lot of these guys just steered away from WinMo development,
Was a good era.
Juicy deserves props for his work, lest we forget. A bit cranky at times, but rolled some greats WinMo ROMs in his day. Agree?
@kidFromBigD, Definitely, Juicy had some really good stuff!
Don’t worry. I still make Windows Mobile ROMs!

@2 Bunny, Thumbs up!
If any newer SYS versions come out, I will update the winmo ROMs again. But, lately, nothing has been leaked from MS and HTC has long stopped developing new stuff for WM. So… now I play with Android ROMs. What can I say ? Times have changed..:)
@NRGZ28,
I cant wait for the new NRG Rom for the Evo3d!!!! thanks for all the work on the TP2 your roms were appreciated!
Like orangekid my first smartphone was the touch diamond. I’m not sure what twist of fate pushed me to this site but once I found ppcgeeks I never looked at a phone the same way. My first flash was a JuicyRom, from there I tried nearly every Diamond ROM on this site before settling in on a rotation of OMJ and Energy with a sprinkle of Fearless. I even flashed my diamond twice after I got my EVO just to see what was new. I was indeed a very exciting time in the WinMo world. It seemed there was a new update by M$ or HTC nearly everyday and the wonderful chefs here always had something new ready for us.
i just bought a touch pro….and i’m back on ppcgeeks only to find this thread…lol
so while the devs make the final mark of departure i raise my mast and set sail back into the wm6.5 threads digging for all those little tweaks i’ve since lost. good times.
I started with the PPC6700 (Apache) back when the deductible was $50.00.
One more of those, 3 more 6800 (Mogul) 2 more XV6800, a 6900, a i910 and a Fathom to finish the cycle.
If it weren’t for Bepe, the PPC Kitchen and the advise of all of the patient chefs, I think I would not have gotten past the first Apache.
Then I discovered that resistance WAS futile and I became assimilated.
But I still use the i910 for iGo8, the Fathom for WiFi office device (great keyboard), a 6800 for the wife’s line and 6800 for my primary line (one of the last units that CAN use a Pay as You Go DATA plan).
Now after going through a DInc I (wife’s new toy), I am the proud owner of a DInc II checking the CM nightlies on a daily basis.
And NOW thanks to the likes of spocky, trueg, and so many others we now have a kitchen to MOD the poor little abandoned step child back into a state of functionality.
YES there is at one last breath for humanity….
