Many geeks grabbed the official test Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) ROM for the HTC EVO 4G yesterday from over at XDA and we want to know what you think so far. Was it everything you wanted, what you wanted and more or not exactly what you expected?
What would you say has improved or needs more work? What we've heard so far from users so far are comments stating the phone runs significantly faster, smoother and the screen response time is better than iPhone devices in some peoples opinions.

I’m using it since it was first released on XDA…
the following is what I’ve noticed so far…
1- It is faster than the previous version of Android 2.2.
2- Looks the same as the previous version of Android with very minor changes.
3- Can’t adjust brightness
4- few apps may not work exactly as they were designed for Android 2.2. For example, the WiFi tethering works but when you try to stop tethering by sliding down the task bar to open the app, it won’t open. But, you can open it by directly hitting the app shortcut icon.
5- When you turn off the phone, It works as hibernating your phone and when you turn your phone back on, it boots up really fast! in a flash.
6- Battery usage is a lil high.
7- I don’t know yet… may be in future, hopefully not lol

@Courtney1985, Thanks
The image says android 3.0 which is honeycomb. Some days I regret giving up my evo for the epic….

@cornelious2, Sprint is working right now on ED12 which is Gingerbread…
Official Gingerbread has also been released in Europe on the Galaxy S.
Since Nexus S 4G is going to have Gingerbread, Epic should have it official and ready in no time…

@cornelious2, I feel your pain! I will never get another Samsung phone… They are so slow with the updates.
I might have to try this out. I have been running Cyanogen Mod 7 on my Evo for a few weeks now and love Gingerbread! I agree it’s definitely faster. I ran Smartbench’s performance tests before and after the upgrade and got nearly double results from the stock ROM to the Gingerbread ROM! If this is more stable than CM7, I’ll be more than happy to flash this.
I tried the leaked version for the EVO, but it only has original HTC Sense 1.0 on it, yuck. Right now I have CM7 on mine and it works like a charm. Some of the differences I have noticed between CM7 and the leaked HTC Sense version of GB are some of the appearances, i.e. the gallery in CM7 is beautifully done whereas the leaked HTC-S version is the same as on Froyo. The problems I am having with CM& is Sprint Visual Voice Mail works but I also subscribe to the VM2Text service and that doesn’t work and now all of a sudden I get 2 text messages with some weird number telling me I have a voicemail. Not sure what that is about. Also GPS doesn’t seem to work on CM7 and my bluetooth file transfer isn’t working either. I can pair my headset and my MacBook Pro to it but no file transfer – bummer.
I love how fast it boots up! My battery doesn’t seem to be draining power any more than on Froyo. I think that I will put it back to Sprint Lover’s Froyo for now and wait til the official release to make sure all the bugs have been worked out. I am sure that Chris will have the GB version for Sprint Lover’s shortly after. Sometimes patience is a virtue!

@eilisaine, Same thing I was thinking. Wait till the bugs get worked out. Still it doesn’t sound too bad. Also, Chris is the main reason I still hang around here. He really deserves all the credit he gets.
Guys! I think you should try this leaked version by OMJ… I think you will like it better than the Sprint Lover’s Froyo. I agree that Android 2.2 is stable but the leak version is much better in a sense that its much faster… Yes the brightness is an issue but not so big to not give it a try. You can always use an app called “Screen Filter” to adjust brightness…only if you really need it.
I’ve tried the gingerbread-evo-deck and Sprint Lover’s, they both are really good Roms… but If some one is using the Sprint Lover’s then I will recommend try the OMJ new release… coz Its much better improvement than the previous version.
If someone is using gingerbread without sense, they may find the new release of Leaked gingerbread with sense a lil as if they are going back but using it for a while I’m sure you will like it.
I personally thought I will never go back to any rom with sense since I started using gingerbread-evo-deck on my Evo, Its amazingly fast and stable too..but I must say after using the leaked version I’ve started to like it. Now I’m waiting for a much stable version… something like a mixture of stock version of gingerbread 2.3.3 and leaked version with sense… It will be great.

@salhtcpro2,
If they would put HTC Sense 3.0 on it that would be sweet! However, I have read that there are screen (hardware) requirements for that version that the EVO doesn’t have so most likely would not support a 3.0 leaked version. Too bad…
I love Sense don’t get me wrong, I have found a wonderful alternative that gives me the same feel of it though. ADW Launcher with the Fancy Widget clock that looks exactly like the one that HTC put in Sense. I am currently using those along side CM7 and it just flies. Just a few more tweaks and everything would be good on that one.

@eilisaine,
I agree with you and aware of the fact that HTC sense 3.0 will not support Evo or any phone of its kind. Even though if someone would tweak HTC sense 3.0 in Evo, It may not work properly as it is not designed for that phone and its hardware.
I’m also aware of the wonderful alternatives and I’ve used them with gingerbread-evo-deck, and It flies …..But, since I started using this leaked version of gingerbread 2.3.3 with sense, I feel as If I don’t need the alternatives. Even If I do, I can use them on this leaked version of Rom. The reason is that the rom response is as quick as the stock version of gingerbread and plus I have widgets built in, moreover I can use the alternatives as I please.
Don’t get me wrong that I’m promoting the use of this leaked version of Rom, but just telling you what I’ve experienced so far using it.
I do miss few stuff of stock version of gingerbread and I like the sense version of gingerbread too… Thats why I said earlier, if its possible, someone can mix them together and we will have ALL IN ONE. lol
One thing I have noticed with the new radio is that my 4G reception now sucks. With the last radio I would get a “fair” signal in my house and now I dont see anything better then very poor unless I go outside. It will connect in my bedroom but will not load web pages now where’s it was fine before. Other then that its running great, switching back to a older radio should fix my problem though.
I was using omj yesterday and it is a great rom. Very stable and fast. I returned back to froyo only becuase some apps like qik are not compatable with 3.0 yet. Once they are i will definitely jump on the 3.0 bandwagon.
I tried installing it but it won’t work …..n I don’t know why …
I have been on this ROM for two days now. I LOVE it. The speed is amazing. I have noticed a few little quirks but overall highly impressed. The speed is amazing! In case I didn’t state that enough.
