Sprint recently announced a new Total Equipment Protection application that is very useful for smartphones if you pay for the TEP insurance plan. If you lose your phone you can locate, lock, clear and restore it all with this application. To give you peace of mind you can restore your information once you recover your handset so don’t think everything is gone forever. This is something Verizon and AT&T have already been successful with so maybe Sprint will be as well.
We haven’t found it in the market yet but you can click here and download it and then place it on your phone. Sprint says it should be showing up starting today for those who pay for TEP.
The application is free and does work with Android and Blackberry devices, again only if you pay for the $7.00 a month TEP protection.
Take a look at the Press Release below:
OVERLAND PARK, Kan.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The cost to replace a lost mobile device is usually the least of a wireless customer’s worries, especially if he or she is protected by Sprint’s Total Equipment Protection, which provides coverage against loss, theft and damage. The bigger nightmare is the thought that a customer’s personal contacts, photos and other private information could fall into the wrong hands. To help alleviate those fears, Sprint (NYSE: S) customers needing to track down a lost device and protect their personal information can do so now with the launch of a new application called Total Equipment Protection App.*
Sprint customers with Total Equipment Protection will be able to access the new application, beginning today, at www.sprint.com/protection, where they will benefit from the following features:
* Locate lost device by sounding an alarm on the smartphone even if in silent mode, doing a real time locate via GPS technology, or viewing the smartphone’s location history on a map via a Web Interface
* Remotely lock their smartphone
* Erase contacts in the address book on a lost smartphone
* Backup, manage and restore contacts
“Anyone who has lost a phone knows that their personal information is possibly just as vulnerable as if their computer was hacked,” said John Carney, senior vice president of consumer marketing for Sprint. “Now, Sprint customers have peace of mind knowing that their personal and private information is safe. TEP and this accompanying application is a safeguard for customers who want protection from not only loss, but misuse and unauthorized access.”
The Protection App is included at no additional charge as a benefit of Total Equipment Protection plan, which is $7 per month, per line of service. It is available to customers with phones using BlackBerry and Android mobile platforms. TEP customers download and install the user-friendly application at www.sprint.com/protection. Privacy protection is included with the Protection App. Each time the smartphone’s location is requested by the Web interface, an SMS text message is sent to the smartphone notifying it has been located.
Do you currently pay for TEP and own a smartphone? Go on and download the application and let us know what you think. Of course, we know you may not make a claim today but you can at least tell us how much you like the looks, features, etc. Are you with Verizon or AT&T and use their similar apps? Let us know! sweet, downloading now
let us know what you think
well, it was easy to dl and install, contacts backed up okay. hopefully it works better than lookout did when i got hammered in Vegas and lost my last Evo lol
sounds good and yea I agree
I also hope you may not even have to use this application to it’s full potential. Having it is peace of mind though.
btw, can you let us know if you received a text just by logging into the website via a pc as well as getting a text when you try to locate your phone? Another user is reporting this in the comments below. Thanks
This is pretty cool for me as I am the administrator for my company’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) and can push this app to all of the company phones. Then, if they lose their device, I can lock/wipe it remotely (already can do that with BES) but also locate it and possibly help the employee to retrieve their lost device.
yay
something useful for rainfreak
My 2.2 Epic isn’t supported… : | fantastic.
supported devices -> (http://protection.sprint.com/?ECID=vanity:protection)
thanks for the addition
and sorry yours is left out
It works for Epic now.
I don’t want this! I don’t want them to locate my Cloned ESN phone that I reported lost or stolen. Because it’s under my bed.
LMBO
ironic.. Lockout has only done this for I dunno ever..
Lookout does this way better. It holds all my pic, music, some docs, and the useless crap of my contacts. My evo is synced with google and yahoo, contacts are are pushed to device as soon as I sync. And facebook contacts are pushed as soon as I sync that. I went to the website to see what all it does and got a txt as soon as I logged in, then a txt when I attempted to locate. How does that help if someone stole my phone and they get a txt warning what I’m doing?
Hmm, I’ll be interested in seeing if this happens to anyone else.
Can somebody explain to me why Sprint continues to diss the Epic? IT’S THE BEST PHONE THEY SELL, is it too much to ask for a little support?
Oh, and I just noticed that the locate function works through text. Awesome, since I will most likely not be receiving texts while my phone is lost. A company run by idiots, for real
I hate to burst you bubble but the Epic is not the “BEST PHONE THEY SELL”…….the lack of support clearly leaves it behind some of the other devices that are available….Specs are great but after using the big 3 EVO/SHIFT/EPIC all for a reasonable amount of time I’d say the Epic left me wanting more and wondering why things that work great on an HTC device sucks on a Samsung device…i.e. GPS/3G Data speeds/build quality…meaning the fact that the slider gets loose after a few weeks…so far so good with the slider on the Shift….wonder why?????? After their Froyo update debacle I wouldn’t ever consider another Samsung device unless is was made by Jesus.
LOL…..imagine if Jesus made a cellphone……that would be hot.
No, I’ve used the big 3 as well, EVO for a month, Shift for a few days, and my Epic since it launched back in august, gotta stick by my initial statement. I’m absolutely willing to allow for the fact that I may be one of the lucky ones, but my GPS locks in <10 seconds consistently, my 3G Data speeds vary from 'ho hum' to 'Macbook' fast, and as far as build quality, having dropped this thing a minimum of 20 times and carried it around in my pocket a little more than I should have, with ZERO after market protective skins or cases, the slider is still nice and springy, and the screen is still scratch free. Oh and speaking of the screen, well, we all know about the screen. It may fall a little short of the Retina display but other than that it has no equal, and it definitely beats the iPhone4 for screen durability.
I ran stock 2.1 for like 6 months when I first got it, and it was just plain fast- videos/games/apps/reboots/loading/whatever. As an owner of all three devices I can safely say I wouldn't think twice about naming the Epic the better phone, I mean to me it's like night and day.
Nowwww, when it comes to which is the better COMPANY, HTC or Samsung, wellllllllll………..
what good is an app, if you Lose the device lol j/k
I love this comment, reminds me of all the noobs on XDA…LMAO
Interesting that this comes out just as this is announced:
ANDROID
HTCSense.com Now Online, Brings Remote Wipe and Other Awesome Features to HTC Phones
Whitson Gordon — HTC announced their new portal for Android phones last month, and today it’s up and fully functional, bringing remote contact backup, phone wipe, ringing, and GPS location to new HTC phones.
The site is only available to users of the HTC Desire HD or Desire Z—neither of which are currently available in the US—but if you’re willing to flash one of the many leaked Desire HD ROMs to your Incredible, Desire, or EVO, then you can take advantage of the site too. It’s also a pretty convincing reason to get the Desire HD or Desire Z when they come out. No longer will you need to roll your own find my phone feature; you get pretty good out-of-the-box treatment from HTC’s site.
Along with all the remote backup and wipe features, you can also reroute text messages and calls to a separate number, mark apps for installation on your phone from the site, and remote install custom themes and skins from HTC. We’re pretty impressed by HTC’s endeavor, and hope that other manufacturers follow suit—and that HTC brings this to a few older phones so we don’t have to settle for the leaked HD ROM.
