Sprint’s HTC Evo 4G To Debut June 4th

For those of you drooling over the upcoming Sprint Evo 4G Android phone, you don't have to wait much longer! Sprint has officially announced its availability on June 4th for $199 on contract of course. There's no mention of required plans to get that price either. Sprint has also announced the ability to do video chat over its 3G and 4G networks, as well as surfing and talking at the same time while on 4G, and HD video capture.

I call dibs..
Im on it!!!
Oh yeah baby!!! This phone will be mines!!!
10.00 extra for 4G. I guess Dan changed his mind?
ya looking at their site it says:
$199.99
after $100 mail in rebate
Phone requires a two-year Agreement and activation on a select service plan and Premium Data buy-up.
whats a premium data buy-up?
Not sure what a premium data buy-up is but it doesn’t seem reasonable in the area you are in isn’t 4G.
Let me correct myself. I assume that the buy-up is because its a 4G phone. That makes sense, but what if your area isn’t 4G and isn’t slated to be for awhile? Should you have to pay that?
ahhh……two days before we thought it was going to come out……..good times…..sidenote: i have a TP2 paper weight for sale on June 5th if any one is concerned about rebel papers on their davenports……
@BlaqMogul – is it really a paper weight? i just need the lcd and front facing buttons.
omg yes i just read the email on my phone! soo glad the “labor day” rumor wasn’t true!
yea it say in fine print that a “required $10.00/month Premium Data add-on for the HTC EVO 4G.”
also add $29.99/month if you want the the Hotspot feature.
mindforst, I’m not sure if you remembered my comment on the EVO 4G’s data plan a few weeks back, I had called Sprint Custmoer Service, and a Representaive told me it wouldn’t cost extra than the normal 3G Data Service.
I stand corrected.
I guess those representatives aren’t all that and a bag of chips…
$10 for 4G… & $29.99 for hotspot = $ 39.99 additional month.. I will buy your pro 2 paper weights haha
Wow, 199 with a new contract, and 449 without a contract, both are affordable, great job on Sprint’s part! Oh, yeah this phone is definitely mines
So say we dont pay this hot spot and tether like we do now with our TP2
I dont need 4g so I will opt out of that, and I sure will not pay 29.99/month for a Hotpot feature, heck I dont use that on my TP2 if that. I just want the EVO and it looks like my “Everything Data” will be enough to make me a happy camper.
+1 Hope someone can hack the hotspot feature like the TP2
As long as you get it rooted its all good for free on the tethering…
Unknown Zone, I don’t know if you plan to pay full price for yours, but keep in mind, it says the $10 4G add-on is required, so I don’t think you can opt out of it. Now if you buy the Evo by itself and activate it like any other phone, I wonder if they will require you to add 4G to your plan. Honestly, I don’t care much about 4G. Not sure if it’s in my area or not, but EvDO is fast enough for me. I only do light web browsing, IM and watch the occasional youtube video. I don’t think I would get $10 worth of usage if I paid for 4G.

I call BS on 10$ add on for 4g. 3g was far more expensive network and now we are going 4g for a far smaller and cheaper network, but we have to pay more? Just doesn’t make much sense after watching the videos of them explaining that for 3g servers you need a building and for 4g you need something slightly larger than a full size computer tower.
I wish it was running Windows 7 instead.
@TWO515TY, i know what your saying, just got off the phone with sprint and they said we will have add the $10.00 no matter what.
I am just a simple user here and there with the internet..etc…now I was at a sprint center the other day, and they stated that as it is now 3g will have the 5g cap and 4g will be unlimited.
i need that!
Just spoke to regional rep for south florida; he confirmed that orders will begin 6/4/10 7am
I think the EVO is a great phone but sprint is trying to make up for lose revenue quick by making everyone pay $10 no matter what. I think if we all stick to our guns and hold off you can possible see sprint change their minds. But if they see everyone running to the stores and yanking them off the shelves they will up the anti and find other charges to add to our bills. As for $29.99 for hotspot all i have to say to Sprint is you did it again liars….you said no additional charges for this phone when you first announced it a couple of months ago and now you wanna empty our pockets.
@explisiv – if the tp2 had a Snapdragon chip, it (Evo) would be a hard sell (i love the physical keyboard) but ill still probably lean towards the Evo….the Pro Series (and WM) was such a fail that im willing to go Android. so yes…paperweight….or…..a personal media player….you pick.
I really hope someone finds a coupon for a discount like they did with the TP1 on best buy. wasnt shack getting it first??
Business users are left out though. No real Excelll or Outlook. I wonder how Open Office is.
Quick Office also allows only viewing. Oh, well. I want but no can have without the ability to edit Word and Excel files.
Ok let me clear this up for everyone here. I’ve been reading blog posts from everywhere comments and all types of stuff for the past few hours. In case your questioning my validity I will be hired in as a sprint tech in a week and my best friend/roomate works at the number 1 sprint store in the country here in Los Angeles CA I will be working at the same location. Dan Hesse was there last friday. He frequents the store we don’t JUST get emails he tells us stuff direct. The $10 charge is NOT optional and it is NOT for 4G. It’s what I call a theroy based charge. This phone supports high media data based functionality. It supports HD streaming video uploading and downloading video chat to name some of the data intensive ones. Now what people fail 2 realize is that it’s UNLIMITED NO CAP DATA. 3G & 4G! that’s why it’s not optional because these functions also work on 3G just obviously not as fast. So instead of sprint crippling the phone and saying when 4G comes to your area then we’ll give u an update or something they said ok since people who don’t live in 4G markets will still use these data intensive functions which will put an extra strain on the network lets juts give every1 the technology out the gate and give everyone TRUE UNLIMITED DATA for 10 extra bucks a month. THAT way, (here’s where it really makes sense) when 4G does come to your market you don’t pay ANOTHER FEE you just HAVE IT. It’s not about 3or4G it’s about no cap data. Dan Hesse didn’t lie he just didn’t reveal all his cards which is what happens in business (Not say’in it’s right I’m just just say’in.) In retrospect if your paying $10 extra per month for unlimited data, when 4G comes to your area and your bill dosen’t go up you got it for “FREE” in that reguard. Now if that’s a deal breaker for you than so be it but some people just need to lay off sprint. They are trying very very hard, the world is not free to live in things cost money. They’re the brokest carrier with the best phone possibly to date. Give them some room to breathe some of you have been on sero plans for over 5 years! if you don’t wanna pay it get a different phone and stay with sprint and still keep a much cheaper bill than with any other carrier. But don’t act like your gonna get something close pricewise anywhere else that’s just not fair 2 Sprint. They just gave MOST of you everything you asked for and much much more and all they asked for was 10 extra bucks C’Mon man apple is RAPPING people. The Evo is comparible to the damn ipad for crying out loud lol. It’s just sad when I read Dan Hesse is a liar looks like I’ll be getting the incredible. Don’t get me wrong that phones amazing but verizon is RAPPING too. they can give you a free phone but can’t lower they’re plans and thats who you’d wrather be with over 10 bucks? This isn’t a premium for a touch pro or even touch pro2 for that matter (which I own a loved both) it’s the Evo people you hated that sprint didn’t get the HD2 and they did you one better it supports video chat man. Your gonna kill those iphone fan boys with these features. If 2 less beers a month isnt worth that then you should be using a Razor or something not a SMARTphone. Oh and P.S. let me be Clear you WILL be able to do voice and data simultaneously. People are just confused on how that’sgoing to workthat’s why they’re saying you won’t. if your in a 4G coverage area and you get or place a call your voice will be on 3G and you can use 4G data while on the call. This only works if you have 4g coverage or of course wifi. No you cannot be on a 4G call and use 4G data but that dosen’t matter because the phone’s chipset is set to default radio in 3G. you can optain this info from the Android 2.1 developer kit realeased for the evo I found it at http://www.pocketnow.com All in all if you get sprint service where you live or frequent 3G or 4G, for $199.00 why not just give it a shot they have a 30 day all inclusive fees waived money back garauntee. If you like it Shapow your in there like swim wear if u can’t justify the extra 10 give it back and go back to whatever you had or chose a different phone and still keep your amazingly low bill for more services than anyone else what’s to be mad or complain about? This is just my OPINION and info nothing more it’s not meant to offend just enlighten don’t flame me I’m open minded I’m not going to pay 30 bucks for the hotspot I think that’s a little steep. I’m just sayin if this exact phone were on ANY other carrier it’d be 10 extra bucks on top of plans that are already 20-60 dollars more then sprints for the same services sometimes less. Give it some thought I know I did. -Fin-
This phone will be mine. I can’t wait for someone to port WinMo to it.
@BenC – You can buy Documents2Go which will allow editing. I’m sure there’s a version of QuickOffice you can buy that will let you do it too, just nothing included for free other than viewing.
Those of you that use Exchange on WM will probably be disappointed with its support in Android. Unless 2.2 changes it, you can only sync 1 month worth of emails and there’s not many advanced features. For folders, it syncs everytime you go into the folder, it doesn’t store them so you can just go back into them later. There are a couple of 3rd party apps you can buy which handle Exchange much better, like Touchdown and Moxier.
great writeup man!@Deggree -
tell’em deggree. it’s like them whiney ******* who bought a porshe but complain that they have to pay for premium gas instead of regular or that their tires cost more to replace than the tires of a cobalt.
@nize2beme – Thanks man sorry I had to go on like that. People just do so much REacting without thinking sometimes you just wanna put they’re life in slo mo and show it to’em. I didn’t just wake up one day and hate on the iphone the phone isn’t bad at all actually (3gs) AT&T and apple as a company are most of the problem. Do you think if the iphone 4G came to sprint and they asked for a ten dollar premium for WHATEVER reason people would say screw you sprint I’ll keep my iphone on AT&T or get a verizon incredible LOL I think not some maybe most would NOT! I’ve been with sprint 4 6 years I remember when they used to cut peoples service off for being 10 cent over. It never happened to me but it did happen. For a company that doesn’t make close to the profit of other carriers with higher plans and worse service in AT&T’s case they’ve been able to make major improvements. If you’d had a bad experience with sprint or any carrier for that matter and you can’t get over it that’s fine thank god for options and choice. But in sprint’s case don’t use the past to negate they’re present efforts no one or no thing is perfect you have to allow people to improve and correct mistakes it doesn’t happen overnight. Some people act like sprint is the George Bush of the phone carriers in this country LOL.
@skoobz – Good anology LMBO!
I can’t wait until June 4th!!! EBAY here I come to sell my TP2. There’s alot of talk going on about the new EVO. 1st it’s the best phone on the market. The fastest network in America and the most reliable one. I love sprint and its plans. I dare you to go to any of the competitor’s sites and try to come close to what Sprint offers. Free nights and weekends starting at 7pm!!! How do you like those apples (I don’t, they’re sour)… Honestly with the ever expanding android market there’s not much that we won’t be able to do with this phone, video conferencing, voice and data at the same time. The ability to view and edit Documents will shortly come if it’s not already out there for free. Getting emails on your EVO will be simple. There’s alot that the “Manual or Experts” say you can’t do but I’m able to do it anyway on my TP2… With the Android platform being as open as it is the possibilities are endless with this new EVO… Three weeks from now it will be mine. I’m starting my savings now. $100 dollars a week and I got it!!!!!
GOD IS GREAT!!!!!
If $10 extra is a deal breaker, then use sprint employee referral program to save some money. 500min plus unlimited any mobile to any mobile, unlimited data and text for $59.99. So, with the added $10 dollar you will be back to square one: $69.99

What really sucks is that my 2year contract will not be up until Oct-Nov this year. I want this phone but dont want to spend $449 for it. I guess I will be adding another number to my account and wait when my contract is up and go with the new number. Anyone have anymore ideas to share about a contract?
@elshaddai –
I agree. Sprint is a good carrier!
best part if my plan expires next may! The Evo will be cheap as all get out then and 4G will be rolled out on many more places! Woop!
@Deggree –
RAPPING?
Hey you can always do that and after you rebate period call and have them switch your old number to your new phone. I think the rebate period is like 30 days… @geeserver -
My favorite application by far is my Slingbox player. I always watch my Comcast DVR on my phone when I’m eating lunch. I also use it to program the DVR when I hear about something during the day that I want to record. Can’t live with it so I hope the sling player software is ready for Android by next month. If not, I’ll wait until it is before getting this phone. Then again, I might not get the phone at all since I have SERO 1250 min/unlimited everything else for $49-95. I know Sprint will never allow me to keep this plan. It’s gonna be hard for me to give it up.
Also… when I signed up with sprint, unlimited meant unlimited and there was NOTHING in fine print that said there was a 5GB limit. My SERO plan was advertised as having unlimited data and that’s what I still have. The 5GB limit was added around 2008. Now I hear that Sprint wants to make us pay an extra $10/mo for “real unlimited 4G service”! Hahaha! Real “unlimited”? How long will it take before Sprint puts a limit on that too?
Preordered my unit today through Best Buy
The world as we know it will be a different place come June 4th, 2010 @ 10am!
@gregjuice – Yea I spit…LOL god gave me that talent.
Does sling.com work on the new Skyfire Browser for Android ? Sling.com lets you connect to your slingbox remotely via a web browser. Check it out and it may allow you to switch to Android faster than you might think.
