No More Nexus One On Verizon!

If you've been waiting for the Google Nexus One to become available on Verizon Wireless, Google just spoiled your plans. If you remember, back when the Nexus One was launched for T-Mobile, they said a Verizon version would be available this Spring. Now Google is telling you to just buy a Droid Incredible by HTC instead. According to them, the Droid Incredible is a "cousin of the Nexus One that is similarly feature-packed".
If you've been waiting for a Nexus One, what are your thoughts? Do you think a Sprint version is still in the works? What caused the change of plans from Google?
In the US, if you’ve been waiting for the Nexus One for Verizon Wireless’ network, head over to http://phones.verizonwireless.com/htc/incredible to pre-order the Droid Incredible by HTC, a powerful new Android phone and a cousin of the Nexus One that is similarly feature-packed. It will be available in stores on April 29th.

why should they bother… the incredible is there and with the release of android 2.2 the fragmentation issue will be a thing of the past
Kind of sucks for some. Yeah the incredible has a couple of extra features like 8m camera but what about those that need that world feature. Incredible isn’t a world phone, at least give people the choice. If this happens to Sprint that will super suck, at least the incredible isn’t super large, if sprint gets stuck with that big ass evo phone as their only 2.1 Droid, that will suck, because a lot of people will still have to wait for a normal size phone, with sprint the waiting never ends.
They better not do the same thing for sprint and the Evo 4G that is coming out this summer… I will be pissed. I have been waiting for the effing nexus one to come to sprint since it was released, and I will be upset if I have to keep waiting until summer to get rid of crappy WinMo.
um you do realize the size of the evo is like less than a quarter of and inch difference comparied to the n1 right? and more likley than not the evo will be released early june
Drksilence Ive played with the hd2 for awhile and though on paper it may only be a quarter of an inch but when you physically pick it up it feels WAAAAY bigger then just a quarter of an inch, not to mention the cdma version is thicker also.
In glad I’m with tmobile, I love my nexus one… I think verizon were just being stupid, they wanted to sell the n1 in stores AND google said no, so verizon made their own smartphone and said what now…… Verizon is weird….. sure can’t wait for froyo without htc having to finish it…..
An I agree, specs may show hd2 or Evo not much bigger, but have the two in hand you will see the difference…. I forget the nexus is even in my pocket, the hd2 although nice while browsing and etc, carrying it must be a pain and just more screen to break….. 3.7 inch is perfect and don’t feel like ya got a tablet up to your face when using it as a phone…
@drksilenc – Um, you do realize that I’ve been stuck using a WinMo phone for almost the last 2 years, and I’m sick of the operating system… Compared to Android, it’s garbage. That said, I’m not about to waste my upgrade eligibility on a hero before the Evo comes out. I would much rather just get a N1 in the spring instead of having to wait until june.
wow really a little over a month? if you want android that badly just put android on your winmo phone… alot of the popular models can alrdy have android on it
o and i have held the hd2 compaired to the hero its not that much bigger. the hero is a flat .5 inch’s vs the hd2 at .43 inch’s you are really gonna notice 1/10 of an inch?
and another 4/10 of an inch of width and 2/10 of an inch height come on
@dragon2 good thinking outside the box, I think you’re correct as to why Google isn’t selling the nexus, Verizon probably wanted to do it in stores as they want the best customer experience. I’ve noticed a lot of people in the US are not fond of buying phones that way, while it works best overseas that way.
It’s a bit disappointing as the Nexus One is a developer phone.
they may not be offering it to vzw customers but vodafone will carry it in their store and it will be free to new customers. http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20100426-713704.html?mod=WSJ_World_MIDDLEHeadlinesEurope
Verizon prob wouldn’t subsidize it or something and Google knew that they wouldn’t sell many without vzw fully on board. that is what I think happened or something close to it.
@p-slim –
I haven’t held an EVO (obviously), but I have used an HD2 and it does not feel that much bigger. In fact, it is more comfortable in my hand and pocket than my TP2. Either way, I’m on Sprint so this doesn’t effect me, I’m getting an EVO.
Google/HTC probably aren’t gonna make a cdma n1. not with sprints evo and Verizons incredible
After looking at the Nexus One “order” website, it looks like Google isn’t going to offer it on Sprint either.
I’m Canadian, so correct me if I’m wrong… but does Verizon and Sprint have GSM networks as well as CDMA? If not that is the reason. Google states that the Nexus one is not compatible with CDMA networks, only the various forms (all of them) of GSM.
I’m kind of glad Bell/Telus here in Canada have upgraded their systems to 3G+ (HSPA), but are also supporting their old CDMA network too (as of right now, until they may phase it out).
GSM appears to be the international standard, whereas CDMA is only north american. So to get a true world phone, you’d need your provider to have GSM compatible networks.
So unless Google decides to make a CDMA version (unlikely as the market is much smaller globally, and their are alternative GSM providers in the U.S. people can choose from), I doubt it will every appear on Verizon or Sprint, unless they upgrade their networks the way Bell and Telus did here to compete with Rogers’ stranglehold on the IPhone.
…who cares? The HTC Incredible is a *better* phone, by every account. I was looking forward to this, but now that it’s not the best Android phone out there, it seems kind of pointless.
Well you’re right… who cares. Its no big deal.
The only thing I see is features…. certain features might work on GSM that won’t work on CDMA… Like on my current diamond CDMA, the conference doesn’t work with 5 people (GSM), only 3. I wonder what other features may be rendered useless as things go forward.
Battery life seems to be longer on GSM phones from what I’ve been reading, but that could be a wrong statement, I don’t know.
And finally, if I decide to go overseas, I can take my phone with me, buy a SIM card from a local provider, and boom, it works.
Some of these things aren’t important to some as much as they are to others, but overall GSM offers more possibilities than CDMA does globally.
