[Rumor] Sprint Evo 4G Coming mid-June w/ 4G HotSpot $10-$20 Extra
![]()
We all know the HTC Evo 4G is coming to Sprint this summer, but now the latest rumor is that it will hit stores around mid-June, more specifically June 13th.
The other rumor is that the WiMax (4G) will be a $10-$20 add-on, which would include the device's 8-device HotSpot capability. There is some confusion with this. Some are saying that 4G will be included in the current data plans (kylelerner even confirmed this with a rep) and that the add-on will only be for the HotSpot service. Only time will tell!

eff yes! somewhat of a release date for us eager beavers! thank you sprint ppl for saying something! cant wait!
WiMax will NOT cost extra. This is a fact.
I called Sprint last night and the representative told me I could add the phone onto my existing Unlimited Shared Data Plan without any additional charges for 4G.
She said the same applies to the Simply Everything Plans as well.
You should change this posting title, mindfrost. It will bring even better news!
And This is a not a rumor, this is coming straight from the person who called Sprint.
Glad to report! [:
Kyle
@kylelerner – This is prolly correct. According to Engadget update, the 10-20 bucks might be on the 4G hotspot access. 4G EVDO is already included on the plan. I hope.
@kylelerner – Well, based on Sprint’s past, you can probably call and get another rep that will say otherwise. I can’t really seem them offering 4G plus the HotSpot thing for free (or included in their current plans). Do you know how many people would leech off of the 4G and use the HotSpot for their primary internet at home?
Until its confirmed or denied, we will probably keep it up as a rumor, even if its a negative one.
EDIT: I tweaked the article a little
I’m not talking Hotspots, I’m talking 4G usage on your phone.
sprint says 4G is no extra cost. the 10-20 bucks must be for the mobile hotspot.

@mindfrost82 – Awesome!! Now that’s something to celebrate about!
I tweaked the article a little, its all still a rumor at this point and things can change by the time its released.
rumors, rumors, rumors. Getting tired of them. Last I heard from Hesse’s mouth was that 4G would not be extra. Did he just lie?
maybe there will be two different phones availible one with 4g one without… or maybe a 3rd that has hotspot while the others don’t… just my thoughts.
To me this sounds like Sprint putting this out there to see how we all react. I can’t see them charging for 4G usage but possibly for use as a hot spot.
Calm down people, its probably for the hotspot. As sprint says they are giving unlimited 4g which does on average 6mbps and with a low ping, people will definitely replace their home hotspots with this service. Sprint will probably charge for this, it only makes sense.
Only people that live alone could replace their home internet system. My wife and son would not be happy campers if I had the houses hotspot in my pocket.
@capthr –
I agree but it would be tempting, at 10 a month for those speeds. I’m sure the hotspot service will cost.
hmm, i’m wondering if we will be able to tether for free, without the hotspot add on, much like we can do now. almost no one carries pam on their acct, and most have found a way to tether on almost every (if not every) device i know of from sprint.
I’m not worried about the hotspot option that was just icing, plus i KNOW there will be a way to tether for free and most likely there will be a free hotspot app/hack.
June is the key thing here!!!!!!!! EFF YESSSSS!!!
How come this phone doesnt support the SERO PLANS???
actually it’s the sero plans that won’t support the phone.
Frankly, I could care less if they charge more for 4G because it won’t be in my town anytime soon. And the hotspot is cool, but I already have a MiFi provided to me from my work, so that is a moot point for me too.
Please, oh please, just tell me my EVO has been shipped already…
I believe Sprint choose this instead of the HD2. I am soooo mad!
Isn’t this the same phone as the HD2 basically but with 4G and Andriod and a tweak here or there?
I think a 10 dollar fee for hotspot access is reasonable.
IF ITS EXTRA they better be giving you UNLIMITED DATA!! thats a huge 10-20$ premium to share your connection if your on a low 500meg to 1gig cap!!!
Seems like a better deal than the Phone as a Modem add-on.
The question is, is there gonna be a charge for a 3g hotspot (no 4g this year in Tampa Bay)
I don’t think 4g is going to cost extra. 4g offers the same calling features as 3g. The only difference is that 4g has faster data not to mention their may be a possibility to talk and use data at the same time like on GSM. The only thing that may cost extra is the hotspot. But that really isn’t that big of a deal. I am sure pda net will have a program soon enough after the phone comes out and most people who want a faster speed will use usb instead of over the air connection. Hotspot is cool but there are other options that are almost guranteed to be free after you purchase the program.
I can’t wait for this phone. I’m going to hate leaving my awesome Sero plan with 10% discount and pick 3.
I don’t believe there will be a data cap on the 4G. My friend is reselling the 4G service through his company in Houston and there isn’t a data cap with that. Does anyone know if there is a way to tether for fee currently on any of the android phones on sprint?
@ace741 – Not sure about Sprint, but with the Nexus One you can WiFi Tether if you root it.
any clue as to when Sprint will finally get HD2? I think it will be a quiet event and probably after EVO. HD2 is the last in the line of the great phones(currently headed by TP2) that will be compatible with Sero
You can tether with android right now withouth rooting the phone. There are 2 ways. 1 is a free app on the android marketplace that will let you usb tether, but I heard it was taken off the market. Then there is pdanet which allows usb and bluetooth tethering. This is the best one so far but you have to pay 1 time fee to purchase program. My friend uses pdanet on his hero and it works very well. I myself use wifi router and internet sharing on my TP2.
Also sprint announced that 4g will not have a cap like the 5gig cap on 3g. It will be truly unlimited. Lets just hope that current everything plans are good enough for 4g without an extra cost.
@pesok –
If I understand right this phone is better then the HD2 so don’t see any reason to get it, well I guess the Sero compatibility would be the reason but would that be enough for sprint to get the HD2?
All I have to say is come on 4G to the Washington DC metropolitan area – http://mobileroar.com/2009/03/25/sprint-4g-coming-to-10-new-cities … Bmore has 4G and not DC… SMH If it’s as good as the iffy Verizon service that I have and I can play xbox from it then I’ll pay, if it’s not as good and I can’t play xbox from the hotspot access then I’ll just buy the phone w/o the extra costs..
From Sprint’s site regarding 4G limit…
Monthly limit – “All you can stream, browse, email, chat, watch and game.”

Hotspot, like tethering (PAM) will perhaps be extra IMO.
