Skype For Windows Mobile Discontinued, At Least For Now

Apparently Skype has discontinued their version for Windows Mobile, at least for now. Their FAQ says they've pulled it because they want to offer their new customers a much improved mobile experience, similar to their iPhone app. Does this mean they will be improving it and releasing a new version down the road? Perhaps.
From their FAQ:
Why can’t I download Skype Lite or Skype for Windows Mobile?
Unfortunately, Skype Lite – a version of Skype for your mobile phone – and Skype for Windows Mobile are no longer available for download from our site.
We’ve chosen to withdraw Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile because we want to offer our new customers an improved mobile experience – much like the version that has proved so popular on the iPhone, and which is now available on Symbian phones. Our focus is on providing a rich user experience that allows you to enjoy free Skype-to-Skype and low cost calls as easily on the move as you do at your desktop.
We felt that Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile were not offering the best possible Skype experience.
Can I still use Skype Lite if I already have it?
Yes. People who have already installed Skype Lite can continue to use it throughout 2010.Can I still use Skype for Windows Mobile if I already have it?
Yes. People who have already installed Skype for Windows Mobile can of course continue to use it.
For now, you can still download it from here, but there's no telling how long that link will work.

Good thing we’ve got it floating around the net.
I wonder if this is related to their announced joint venture with Verizon.
I just downloaded this like a week ago from their site. I guess it’s a good thing I did!
@Link9228
Bingo!
Everyone was like “I have been using skype on winmo for 6 years….why do I need Verizon?” and Skype was like “hmmm…lets make it unavailable..”
Yeah… I agree. The timing of this has Verizon written all over it.
Glad I updated recently.
I hate to say it, but I’d bet Verizon will force them into dumbing down the freeware app while saving all the “new extra” features for all but their paying customers.
So what’s with this partnership between Skype and Verizon? Does anyone have some links I could get some information from? In the end, I am a Verizon customer, but I won’t be paying for a Skype application I’ll use once or twice a month when I’m not at the computer.
Whatever happened to “do no evil”?
@cinnr; um the BigV is the new evil
I want to know how pulling an app makes for a better user exerience? maybe if they concentrated more on function (rather than form)(ie spkr) then users would have been more than happy to start paying for some skypetime
as i’ve said on WMExperts,this is discrimination and is comparable to restaurant owners saying “from now on we will only just serve white people because we feel that our workers arent being treated properly or paid enough” ¡¡such malditos asquerosos desgraciados crétinos tarados!!
Eric12341, I agree with what you said
lol at what you wrote at the end! – high five -
as to the news though. I at least do help they later on release an application that is “improved” does anyone know of a good third party applications for this? I have IM+ skype.. it fails, nimbuzz as well. R.I.P for now skype…
@eric12341 –
I disagree. IF this is a result of a Verizon deal as I speculated, Skype is doing nothing more than what every software/tech developer does:
Develope a product long enough to attact a user base to such a degree that money can be made from that application… that means starting to charge for that application, or (potentially in this case) sell that application to a larger entity.
Software developers are in business to make money, not provide a service to other tech-heads out there like us.
