Apple Announced iPad
After all the hoopla and rumors going around the internet over the last couple of days, the biggest rumor of an iTablet has finally been announced, officially called the iPad.
The specs include:
-0.5″ thick and 1.5lbs light
-9.7″ IPS display, capacitive multitouch touchscreen
-Built-in accelerometer, mic, 30-pin connector, 802.11n Wi-Fi, compass, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
-10 hours of battery life and one month standby time!
-1GHz Apple A4 processor
-16GB, 32GB and 64GB Flash storage
It can run all the apps currently available on the iPhone/iPod, but it will also have its own development kit available.
So far, there's been no announcement of the end of the Apple and At&t iPhone exclusivity deal as previously though.
UPDATES:
Pricing - Wi-Fi only - $500 for 16Gb, $600 for 32Gb, $700 for 64Gb. Add $130 to those prices to get 3G.
Data - Will be offered through At&t and will be $30 for unlimited data with no contract. You can also pay $15 for 250Mb.

The Ipad is Amazing! I will be buying 1. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. It’s basically an Ipod Touch/Iphone on steroids. All Iphone/Apod touch apps will work. Plus the new Apps are being developed. SDK out for DL now. I Used to have an Iphone and I enjoyed Jailbreaking it and putting on some stuffs. I will enjoy this 10x as much.
Or you could get one of the millions of tablets already out or coming out which can do and always have been able to do everything this can and more.

accelerometer for a tablet…this is feasible how exactly? in fact I think it would be more of a hindrance and niche for larger devices.
One of the fantastic things about convertible tablets is that it does rotate with the press of the button or rotation of the screen so issues of autorotate won’t occur without user input.
Also I notice there is no pen there. I’m sorry but in this day and age with wacom as standard, for graphic editing, isn’t a pen necessary? Further where is the written recognition software? Who is this marketed toward? For the users that again do work on this, how does this serve as a better environment than a mac? So far with the specs listed, its an underwhelming device that lacks innovation and tries to capitalize on the i moniker as it doesn’t give many other advantages beyond that. I mean 1ghz processor – what is this 2002???
Heck from my vantage point the third party developers that create a true mac tablet (you know a slate with mac osx 10 ability to run adobe and dual core processing) that is impressive. This, for me being a tablet user for a long time is an overglorified niche toy…

I think what existentialism is pointing at is that Apple has a history of taking things that are very mundane and talking them up to make an I(whatever) sound great. Copy & paste, bluetooth, and 3G to name a few. It also features multi touch, not sure about an accelerometer (or other specs), but it features Full Windows 7. It seems like Windows 7 is already set up for a move to the tablet platform because of the larger task bar icons, and the OS already comes “touch aware”. But, we should see many more tablets coming out soon, on the heels of the Itab.
This is what is called a device of the decade!

I was pretty excited about this before launch, but wow, complete and utter failure. Expected more from Apple.
Same pitfalls as every other tablet (text input being a big one) with none of the advantages of having a full desktop OS in a semi-portable device. Too big for a pocket, but offers nothing that you can’t get in a pocketable device. I was really hoping for some fancy new interaction model.
I don’t even have the words to describe it. Apple spent a decade perfecting this? This is the tablet that was finally good enough to put the Apple logo on? I thought Apple was on a roll after the iPhone, but maybe it’s really a one hit wonder. So disappointing…
i dont like the fact that apple is using its own CPU….that hasnt gone well for them in the past but hey if somone can root this thing to run something else count me in

@snowplow54 – I already have a tablet a long time ago. HP tx2000. It’s no different than my laptop. That difference is that I can rotate the screen and touch it. I also have a UMPCs. I had an Iphone and I enjoyed it. Jailbreaking it and stuffs. Ipad just made it 3 times bigger. So the games will be 3x enjoyable. Game on!
Remember, Ipad will not replace Ur laptop or Ur tablet PC. It’s more of the level of MID’s like the Archos 5, and now archos released the Archos 7. It’s just as simple as that.
If You want a Mac tablet that will compete with the PC tablets, Save 5 gran and buy an Axiotron Mobook. They will give U the biggest tablet screen at the Moment. 15.4″. It will run the full OSX. Not like the Ipad which use the Iphones OSX.

the dell xt 2 that’s a tablet – I can use my adobe, its light weight for me to use it and read on it. And I can type and I can multi touch! What does this offer me that my dell xt 2 doesn’t except a downgrade with no keyboard, no productivity, no support for mac osx programs (and no I don’t mean iphone/ipod touch applications, I mean adobe, I mean office, heck even I will go for a decent mail client)

You need to calm down there buddy. This thing is a toy. It doesn’t even have a USB port. The glaring flaw with this device was evident when Apple offered an accessory which was a hardware keyboard and stand, which turns it into a laptop. There is nothing non-toy related that a simple netbook couldn’t do better. Nobody is using this thing for any serious work or writing. An accelerometer is moronic for an ereader, because people like to lay down and read on their side.
And the price point on this device is not “good” or even acceptable. By the time you get all of the adapters and 3g service, this toy is going to cost you well over a thousand dollars in the first year. And Apple intentionally left out features because within a year they will be releasing the Ipad2 which has more “revolutionary” features like a camera and the ability to run 2 applications at once.
I feel bad for apple fans, always having to explain why their products are missing features that other less-expensive alternatives have standard. “no one wants that anyway” it’s just like jobs saying I don’t need a stylus.
Oh, and btw, here are some more cons:
-Its ugly with a giant black bezel.
-Its 4:3 so movies have even larger black bars which look huge because of the bezel.
-No flash support, so webpages have giant voids where embedded videos should be.
-You will need an adapter to do ANYTHING with this device. No USB ports, no SD card slot, no magsafe connector. All means different adapters you need to buy.
-Touch Keyboard takes up half the screen and is impossible to use because the back of the device is curved and it rocks when placed on a flat surface.
-Completely closed application system. You are at the whim of Apple with what you install. If Apple doesn’t allow it, you can’t get it.
-Ability to run 1 thing at a time. This is completely embarrassing for any device. How can anyone defend this? Apple doesn’t think I should be able to listen to pandora when browsing the web?
-Who the hell is going to pay 30 dollars a month for 3g service when they are already paying for their phone to get data?
This is not even an oversized iphone because it cannot make calls. It’s an oversized ipod touch. I’m no iphone or apple hater either, but for people to get excited over this just show how brainwashed they are by Jobs and his crap. If you would buy this because games from the Itunes app store would look cool, then you’re an idiot.
And what is the point of making a wifi model and a wifi/3g model? Why not just make one model and put the price somewhere in between.

Listen, These people keep tryin to compare the Ipad to a Tablet PC. 1, Ipad does not run a full OS. It runs a Mobile OS. They should be comparing the Ipad to an Android MID or a WinCE MID. If they want to compare a tablet PC to a Mac, Go search for Axiotron Modbook.
Now try to compare the Ipad to any other Android MID and a Wince/WM 6.5 with 5″ and above screen and You will see that there is no comparison.

Ipad has a GPS chip too. I use my UMPC and Tablet to navigate especially on long distances. I can use the Ipad now.

What was Apply thinking?? Nice ebook reader and general media device, but without video telephony, the device has no more magic for me than an oversized IPod Touch. Certainly worth the premium over the Touch, but not this much of one.

When accelerometer was added to HTC device not too long ago, everyone was so excited. TP to be exact. It’s like looking for a bright future. When accelerometer games and apps hits the interwebs, Everyone rejoiced. Now, When Accelerometer was incorporated on an Apple Ipad, It suddenly failed? What a… U don’t get a prize for your loyalty status.

Ur gonna tell me that ur phone can multitask OTB? WM devices does not run properly OTB. U have to do numerous tricks and ROM flashes to get it to a point that will satisfy U for a little.
I have to assume the brainstorm went something like this.
“Hey! I have an idea. Lets get an iphone, then take away it’s ability to make calls, and make it too large to conveniently carry with you. On top of that we’ll give it 3g connectivity and then saddle it with the country’s worst 3g network!”
This could have been very cool if they had gone ahead and at least put the Mac OS on it. Giant ipod touch = fail. I dont feel that way just about apple either though. I think a tablet with WM or Android would be fail too. If it’s too big for my pocket, it’s too big for a mobile OS.

I’m getting people on twitter and facebook telling me the only reason I think this thing sucks is because I am a windows fanboy. I think it sucks because it has a huge bezel, is too expensive for what you can do with it, it needs adapters to even have very basic connectivity functionality, and the external keyboard costs an additional 70 bucks. Why am I complaining about it then? Because this thing got HYPED for like 6 months, and turned out to be underwhelming. If this thing came out of the blue and apple fans liked it, and I didn’t, I’d be whatever… but because it was so hyped, and so many people are calling it revolutionary, when it really isn’t, that’s why I will continue to vocally say this thing is crap.

I’ve stuck with my vogue because yes, it does run simultaneous applications and I’m running the stock alltel rom. I don’t see this replacing the netbook. I’m a PC and will always be, even if I’m using Google Chrome OS.
