Will Operation Chokehold Succeed?

Update: The operation seems to have failed according to Yahoo! Tech. Some users reported that they could only get EDGE access and no 3G, while others said they still had 3G and some even said their speeds were faster than usual. For my area, I still had 3G with the same speeds I usually get.
If you haven't heard lately, the Fake Steve Jobs has encouraged iPhone users to issue a stand against At&t by using the most data-intensive apps they can for an hour, starting at noon PST today (Friday, 12/18/09). Their goal is to bring down At&t's network to send a message that they're tired of "substandard" network performance and abusive comments towards iPhone users. At&t has hinted at charging data-heavy users extra because 3% of smartphone users are consuming nearly 40% of the wireless bandwidth in the country.
The engineers have asked me to serve as a kind of communications director for their efforts — soliciting ideas on what apps to use (Pandora may not be the best) and how to refine the attack on the network.
If anyone has ideas, use the comment strings. Tell your friends. Get people involved. We have five days to create a movement and plan a major assault. As the Portuguese said during the Obama campaign: Si, se puede.
So what is your opinion? Will Operation Chokehold succeed or fail? Since I'm an At&t user, I will be able to test the network in the west Chicago suburbs during this hour and report back on internet speeds, abilities to make calls, etc.
Someone even made a Facebook FanPage and an Event Page!

hells to the yeah i am down for this!! i live in lubbock, tx anly about a quarter of a million here so there may not be many but i will get mine and my wifes phones a rocking!!!
if this actually works doesn’t this just hurt people who need to use their phones for actual productive or emergency purposes?
sounds a little puerile to me.
The only way it stands a chance is in the cities most directly affected by the network issues, and only if a large enough number of people in those cities participates. As much as I’d love to crash their network, I don’t think the 5 iPhones I have access to is enough to be any concern.
orangekid. this will affect the 3g networks only there older tech will still work. at&ts network is fine for older stuff they just have way to many out of date antennas that they dont want to upgrade
@drksilenc –
still its only going to hurt people trying to get 3g coverage if it actually works, not the company. sounds like a futile effort from the outset.
if you want to hurt att then go to a different network…
I have Sprint
so I can’t participate. but I will let the 20 or so people I know on at&t with Iphone’s know. Good luck everyone!
I agree with orange. If enough people suck it up and can live without their iphone for a TINY amount of time and leave ATT, then I think they would get the message. As long as they are getting paid for crappy service, why change it? Heck they are wanting to charge more!
I’m so sick of iPhone users crying !!!!!!
If you don’t like AT&T, go elsewhere …….
Get a LIFE !!!!!!!!!!
so, what was the end result?
results are, Iphones are still lame, and their users right there in 2nd place.
Heh, sounds like this was a big flop. So sorry iPhone whiners. Looks like your little ploy didnt get the results you wanted, so hang in there, and keep whining. OR, just dump ATT, and get a phone on a good carrier.
What was that supposed to accomplish? To get ATT angry and start charging even more for their cell phone internet?
We are running out of decent cellular carriers. The industry is becoming Monopolized, as all carriers are making similar policies, of which they are under Federal Investigation for. What that means is that maybe by the 22nd Century, reforms will be in place!
@Biker1,
Yes, because regulation of the telco industry in the 1980′s worked oh-so-well. All it did was create multiple, regional monopolies that didn’t compete rather than one big one that still didn’t compete.
Leave the market alone and let consumers decide. As long as consumers are stupid, they’ll continue to suffer, and those of us who know better will continue to drive the market to something better.
@dkd711 – nice.
iPhone whiny babies… Get a real phone and network *or* STFU.
